The St Andrews Links Collegiate event concluded with Northwestern University and the University of Arizona emerging as champions in the men’s and women’s divisions at the Old Course. The tournament featured the University of St Andrews representing the UK against Northwestern, Arizona, and Howard University, the first HBCU to participate. Two days of individual stroke play on the Jubilee Course resulted in Ashley Yun of Northwestern winning the women’s event and Zach Pollo of Arizona claiming the men’s title. The final day saw Northwestern triumph in the men’s competition while Arizona secured victory in the women’s event, both with a 4.5-1.5 scoreline.

In the men’s event, Northwestern’s team included three Scots – Cameron Adam, Atchie Finnie, and Nial Shiels-Donegan – along with head coach David Inglis from Edinburgh. Inglis expressed his joy at winning the trophy on the Old Course and highlighted the significance of the victory for the team. Arizona’s women’s head coach, Giovana Maymon, commended her players for their resilience in adverse weather conditions, emphasizing the team’s determination and competitiveness throughout the event. St Andrews’ men’s and women’s teams both secured third place by defeating Howard, showcasing their strength on their home course.

The tournament provided a challenging test for the elite student golfers, as they navigated the dunes, hummocks, and hollows of the Jubilee Course. With individual champions crowned in Pollo and Yun, all eyes turned to the Old Course for the matchplay competition that determined the team champions. St Andrews head coach Ian Muir praised the event and highlighted the valuable experience it provided for the players, especially the new members of the team. Howard’s head coach, Sam Puryear, reflected on the significance of the tournament for his team, emphasizing the unforgettable experience and competitive spirit displayed by his players.

Overall, the St Andrews Links Collegiate event showcased the talent and resilience of student golfers from prestigious universities, culminating in thrilling competitions on the historic Old Course. The tournament’s international flair, with teams from the UK and the US competing, added to its prestige and excitement. The challenging weather conditions and unique links-style course presented a true test of skill and determination for the players, who rose to the occasion with impressive performances. As champions were crowned and memorable moments were created, the tournament left a lasting impact on all participants and highlighted the enduring appeal of golf as a sport that brings people together across borders and cultures.

The success of Northwestern and Arizona in claiming the team titles underscored the depth of talent and dedication within collegiate golf programs. Players like Yun, Pollo, and the student-athletes from Howard showcased their skills and competitive spirit on a global stage, earning recognition and respect for their achievements. The supportive coaches, including Inglis, Maymon, Muir, and Puryear, played a crucial role in guiding their teams to success and fostering a positive and competitive environment for their players. The St Andrews Links Collegiate event served as a platform for these student-athletes to showcase their abilities, make lasting memories, and continue the tradition of excellence in collegiate golf.
