Optimal Tee Height for Maximum Distance

If you want to add distance to your drives without undergoing speed training or a new fitness routine, optimizing certain variables with your driver, such as tee height, can help you achieve this goal. Tee height may seem trivial, but it can have a significant impact on your driving distance. Back in June 2006, GOLF Magazine conducted an experiment to determine the optimal tee height for maximizing distance with the driver. The results of this experiment can provide valuable insights for golfers looking to improve their performance off the tee.

The experiment involved 27 golfers, ranging in age from 25 to 71, with handicaps from scratch to 29. These golfers were divided into groups based on their handicap levels and were asked to hit drives from three different tee heights: low, mid, and high. The results showed that within each handicap level, carry distance for mid and high tee heights was significantly longer than for low tee height. The high tee height provided the most distance, with players gaining an average of 12 yards more carry per drive compared to the low tee height.

High-handicappers benefitted the most from using the high tee height, gaining an average of 18 yards over their drives with the low tee height. Despite the increase in distance, accuracy in terms of hitting the fairway was not compromised when using higher tee heights. The percentage of tee shots landing in the fairway remained consistent across low, mid, and high tee heights.

Following the experiment, nine out of 27 players planned to change from mid to high tee height, with three of those players coming from the low-handicap group. The study was conducted by GOLF Top 100 Teacher Eric Alpenfels and Bob Christian, Ph.D., dean emeritus of the School of Health and Human Performance at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. These findings highlight the importance of tee height in maximizing driving distance and provide a practical adjustment that golfers of all levels can implement to improve their performance off the tee.

By understanding the impact of tee height on driving distance and accuracy, golfers can make simple adjustments to their setup that can lead to significant improvements in their game. Tee height is often an overlooked aspect of the game, but as demonstrated by the results of this experiment, it can play a crucial role in optimizing performance off the tee. Whether you are a low-handicap player looking to gain a competitive edge or a high-handicapper seeking to add distance to your drives, experimenting with different tee heights can help you unlock your full potential on the golf course.

Incorporating the findings of this tee height study into your game can lead to more consistent and powerful drives, setting you up for better approach shots and lower scores. By using a high tee height, you can promote higher launch angles and reduce spin, resulting in longer carry distances and improved overall performance with your driver. So the next time you step onto the tee box, remember to pay attention to your tee height and make the necessary adjustments to maximize your distance off the tee.
