Pebble Beach Resorts establishes schedule for renovation of Spanish Bay

The Links at Spanish Bay, located in Pebble Beach, was designed as a Scottish-inspired course along the California coast. Despite being one of the three resort courses on 17-Mile Drive, it has not had the same popularity as its counterparts, Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass. The Pebble Beach Company has announced plans for a renovation of Spanish Bay to elevate its status to match its siblings. Renowned architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have been hired to lead the renovation project, which is scheduled to begin on March 18, 2026, and be completed by the spring of 2027.

Hanse and Wagner are known for their work on prestigious golf courses and have been involved in several restoration and renovation projects. Their redesign of Spanish Bay will focus on staying within the original course footprint while enhancing the playability and appearance of the course. The goal is to transform Spanish Bay from a Scottish-inspired course from the 1980s into a modern California masterpiece. The course, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Watson, and Sandy Tatum and opened in 1987, features a scenic layout along a protected coastline.

The renovation of Spanish Bay will mark a significant upgrade for the course and is aimed at attracting more golfers to play there. The project will also include the reconstruction of public-access footpaths on the property that were damaged during recent storms. These improvements will enhance the overall experience for both golfers and visitors to the resort. Pebble Beach Company is confident that the redesign will make Spanish Bay a must-play course that is on par with its esteemed counterparts.

With the renovation set to begin in 2026, golf enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the transformation of Spanish Bay into a top-tier golf destination. The course’s unique layout, which winds through native dunes and the Del Monte forest before returning to the coastline, provides a one-of-a-kind golfing experience. The addition of Hanse and Wagner’s expertise to the project is expected to bring a fresh perspective and innovative design elements to the course.

As the renovation progresses, updates on the project will be shared with the public, building excitement for the reopening of Spanish Bay in the spring of 2027. The course closure will allow for the necessary changes to be implemented, ensuring that the final result meets the high standards set by Pebble Beach Company. Golfers looking for a new and improved golfing experience in Pebble Beach will have Spanish Bay as a top option once the renovation is completed.

Overall, the renovation of Spanish Bay represents a significant investment by the Pebble Beach Company to enhance the golfing experience for players at the resort. With the expertise of Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner leading the project, Spanish Bay is poised to become a premier golf destination in California. The combination of a stunning location, experienced architects, and a commitment to excellence sets the stage for an exciting transformation of Spanish Bay into a modern masterpiece on the California coast.
