Phil Mickelson details unexpected change in strategy

Phil Mickelson, a 54-year-old golfer, recently had to miss a tournament due to a shoulder injury but returned to compete in the next event in Australia, where he performed well with his best round. Mickelson continued this positive momentum in the LIV Hong Kong tournament, opening with a strong three-under 67 and placing tied for 14th after the first round. However, Paul Casey leads the tournament at seven under, two strokes ahead of a group of players at five under. Mickelson credits his recent success to a new strategy he has implemented for the 2025 season.

In previous years, Mickelson admits that he tried to overpower courses with his lack of speed compared to other players on tour. However, he realized this approach was not working and decided to find a different way to shoot low scores and compete with the younger, faster players. Mickelson started his round on a positive note, making birdies on the second, third, seventh, and eighth holes, offset by a few bogeys towards the end of his round. He acknowledges that he needs to limit mistakes and focus on making more birdies to be competitive in tournaments.

Mickelson acknowledges that he cannot keep up with the speed of some of the younger players on the tour but believes he can still be successful by minimizing mistakes and making more birdies. This shift in strategy is a departure from his previous mantra of “hit bombs” and reflects his adaptability as a seasoned golfer. With only two events left before the Masters, Mickelson is determined to fine-tune his game and be competitive at Augusta National. Despite a modest performance at the Masters last year, he tied for second the year before, showing that he still has the ability to contend at major championships.

Throughout his career, Mickelson has been known for his creativity and shot-making abilities, which have helped him secure multiple major championships. By adjusting his approach to the game and focusing on precision rather than power, Mickelson is demonstrating his willingness to adapt and evolve as he continues to compete at the highest level. His performance in the LIV Hong Kong tournament reflects his dedication to finding new ways to win and remain competitive in a sport dominated by younger, faster players.

As Mickelson looks ahead to the remaining events on the LIV Golf schedule and the upcoming Masters tournament, he is focused on eliminating mistakes, making more birdies, and staying in contention on the leaderboard. His experience and strategic mindset set him apart from many of his competitors, allowing him to approach the game from a different perspective and find success through unconventional means. With his recent performances suggesting a resurgence in form, Mickelson’s fans are hopeful that he can continue to defy expectations and compete at the highest level for years to come.
