The World Golf Hall of Fame in Pinehurst, N.C., is set to open with excitement and pride as the final touches are being put on the 9,000-square-foot facility. This new iteration marks a return to the sandhills of North Carolina, known as “the cradle of American golf.” The original World Golf Hall of Fame building was opened at Pinehurst Resort 50 years ago but was later moved to St. Augustine, Fla., due to financial issues. Now, the USGA is in charge of the Hall, having provided the space inside its new administration facility.
Under the new structure, the USGA will manage the artifact collection, visitor experience, and future induction ceremonies. The Class of 2024 will be inducted in a ceremony on June 11, just before the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The governance structure will remain the same, with members of the WGF Board of Directors sitting on a separate Hall of Fame board. The USGA museum staff has already played a significant role in the re-imagined Hall of Fame, blending the USGA and WGHOF collections to enhance the stories of honorees.
Pinehurst’s large number of annual visitors makes it an ideal location for the Hall of Fame, with approximately 1.2 million golfers passing through each year. The induction criteria and selection process will remain under the control of the board, with three categories for consideration: male competitor, female competitor, and contributor. The Hall will aim to maintain impartiality in the selection process to uphold the integrity of the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame location features the USGA Experience on the first floor, showcasing the organization’s core responsibilities. The second floor houses the Hall of Fame proper, with 170 lockers holding 3,000 artifacts representing various honorees. The lockers are organized by eras rather than induction years, highlighting the game’s development over time. Visitors can access additional information on each locker through an online app and interactive multimedia kiosks.
The exhibit design aims to recreate a locker room while also presenting a museum-worthy display of the members’ lives and legacies. Each locker tells a unique story, with personal items and artifacts that offer insight into the honorees’ inspirations and accomplishments. The Hall of Fame’s focus on quality over quantity ensures that each artifact has meaning and significance in telling the story of golf’s evolution and key characters. The new World Golf Hall of Fame in Pinehurst is poised to attract golf enthusiasts and visitors with its engaging exhibits and rich history of the game.
