Practice the ‘heartbeat’ of your golf swing with Peter Kostis’ simple drill

In a recent episode of “Kostis & McCord: Off Their Rockers,” golf instructor Peter Kostis explained that the golf swing is made up of three levers that need to work individually before coming together for a successful swing. The first lever is the wrist to the club head, which is crucial for proper hinging and releasing of the club. The second lever is the shoulder socket to the wrist, which involves swinging the arm from the shoulder socket. The third lever is the collarbone, which rotates around the body. Kostis emphasizes the importance of mastering these elements individually before combining them into a fluid swing.

To practice the first lever, Kostis suggests a simple drill involving chipping 15-20 yard shots. This drill focuses on the wrist action and helps train the hands to work properly in the golf swing. Kostis also recommends a drill where a towel is placed 5 inches behind the ball, challenging the player to chip without hitting the towel. This drill helps players avoid being a “scooper” and encourages proper hand action.

Kostis stresses the significance of hand action in the golf swing, as it serves as the foundation for a successful swing. Good hand action, along with a proper grip, sets the stage for the rest of the swing to fall into place. While some may think of the golf swing as a simple body rotation, Kostis emphasizes the importance of mastering each lever individually to create a consistent and efficient swing.

According to Kostis, many great players learned how to use their hands effectively at a young age, highlighting the importance of proper hand technique in the golf swing. By practicing drills that focus on wrist action and hand placement, players can develop the necessary skills to execute a successful swing. Kostis encourages players to train their hands so that they can seamlessly integrate into the swing without having to think about them during play.
