Previewing the Presidents Cup

The President’s Cup, a biennial team match play event between the USA and an International team, is set to kick off its 15th renewal at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec. Team USA will be looking to extend its winning streak to ten in a row in Canada, as they have not lost this century. Since the event’s inception in 1994, Team USA has emerged victorious 12 times, with the International team only managing to secure one win in 1998, and one tie in 2003.

Both teams consist of six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks. Team USA is being captained by Jim Furyk, while the International team is led by Canadian Mike Weir. Among the six automatic qualifiers for Team USA are Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala. Furyk selected the next six highest points scorers to complete the team, including Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman, and Max Homa.

The 2022 Presidents Cup was won by Team USA with a score of 17.5-12.5 at Quail Hollow. Weir’s International team includes automatic qualifiers Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Adam Scott, Tom Kim, Jason Day, and Byeong Hun An, as well as captain’s picks Corey Conners, Min Woo Lee, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Taylor Pendrith, Si Woo Kim, and Mackenzie Hughes. Weir strategically selected three Canadians, Conners, Pendrith, and Hughes, taking advantage of the home field.

Due to its PGA Tour sanctioning, players contracted to LIV Golf are ineligible for selection for either team, meaning big names like Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau are absent from the US team, while potential International team candidates Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann are also excluded, significantly impacting the ‘home’ team’s chances of victory.

The Presidents Cup differs from the Ryder Cup as it spans over four days instead of three. The event kicks off on Thursday with five four-ball matches, followed by five foursomes matches on Friday. Saturday will feature four morning foursomes and four afternoon four-ball matches, while Sunday will see 12 singles matches. The first team to reach 15.5 points will claim victory in the Presidents Cup.

For those looking to watch the Presidents Cup, Sky Sports will be providing live coverage of all five sessions in Canada, offering over 28 hours of action across the four tournament days, including daily highlights and exclusive Presidents Cup programming. Get ready for an exciting showdown between Team USA and the International team at the prestigious Royal Montreal Golf Club.
