Michael Kim, a 31-year-old PGA Tour pro, has played with about 1,000 amateur golfers in his nine-year professional career and has identified five common mistakes that he sees among them. One of these mistakes is in the full swing, where Kim notes that 95% of amateur golfers tend to go over the top and chop at the ball due to inadequate hip and shoulder turn in the backswing. To fix this, Kim suggests a more relaxed setup with a bigger turn to the right side, allowing for a smoother transition into the downswing.

Another common mistake that Kim sees is in pitch shots, where players set up as if it were a full shot, leading to inconsistencies in their ball striking. Kim recommends a setup that focuses on hitting a shorter shot, with weight slightly left, feet closer together, and hands ahead to promote a more in-to-out swing path. By using the body turn rather than relying on wrist action, players can improve the quality of their pitch shots.

In chipping, Kim points out that the scoop action often results from amateurs trying to add loft from a poor position, leading to mishits and chunks. To avoid this, Kim suggests using a putter for shots within 30 yards of the green and opening up the club in the rough. Additionally, Kim has shared a video and thread on shallow and steep chip shots to provide further guidance on improving chipping technique.

When it comes to bunker play, Kim advises against trying to hit behind the ball and instead emphasizes setting up correctly to avoid fat shots. By digging in slightly with the feet, positioning the ball forward, and opening the club face, players can improve their bunker play and make more consistent contact with the sand.

In putting, Kim highlights the importance of starting putts online and accurately aiming at the target. He suggests using training aids such as the Pelz Tutor to help golfers improve their setup and stroke consistency. By developing a reliable putting routine and focusing on alignment, amateur golfers can make significant improvements in their putting performance on the green.

Overall, Michael Kim’s insights and tips for amateur golfers focus on fundamental aspects of the game, such as the full swing, pitch shots, chipping, bunker play, and putting. By addressing common mistakes and providing practical solutions, Kim aims to help golfers of all levels improve their skills and lower their scores on the course.
