In the world of professional golf, pros have the luxury of being able to get their hands on any golf club they want, whenever they need it. This includes getting clubs that are not even commercially available yet, as seen with Phil Mickelson and his custom-made Ping Eye2 lob wedge. Mickelson, known for his innovation and creativity on the course, had Callaway create a replica of his beloved old Ping wedge with Callaway’s unique grooves. This custom wedge showcases Mickelson’s attention to detail and desire for the best equipment to improve his game.

During a recent episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Johnny Wunder, GOLF’s new director of gear, shared the story of how Mickelson’s custom Eye2 wedge came to be. Wunder, who previously worked at Callaway, shared that Mickelson brought in his old Ping Eye2 wedge and asked if Callaway could recreate it. The result was a Metal Injection Molded (MIM) prototype that closely resembled the original wedge, showcasing the dedication of Mickelson and the expertise of Callaway in creating custom equipment for elite players.

Wunder shared that Mickelson’s long-standing use of the Callaway PM grind wedge was inspired by the sole design of the Ping Eye2 wedge. However, the custom Eye2 prototype created for Mickelson was truly one of a kind, showcasing the lengths to which pros will go to get the perfect club for their game. Despite the high cost and exclusivity of custom equipment like the Eye2 wedge, Mickelson’s dedication to his craft and his willingness to push the boundaries of equipment innovation sets him apart as a true equipment connoisseur on the PGA Tour.

The relationship between pros like Mickelson and equipment manufacturers like Callaway highlights the importance of custom fitting and personalized equipment in professional golf. While recreational golfers may not have access to the same level of customization as the pros, the idea of using equipment that is tailored to your game and preferences is important for players of all levels. Investing in a custom fitting or working with a club fitter to find the right equipment for your game can lead to improved performance and enjoyment on the course.

In the competitive world of professional golf, every detail matters, and having the right equipment can make a significant difference in a player’s performance. Pros like Mickelson understand the importance of using the best equipment available to give them an edge on the competition. By working closely with equipment manufacturers and utilizing custom options, pros can fine-tune their game and optimize their performance on the course. The story of Mickelson’s custom Eye2 wedge serves as a testament to the dedication and innovation that elite players bring to their equipment choices in pursuit of excellence.
