The pro golf world has been embroiled in controversy and division over the past two years, largely due to the creation of the Saudi-financed golf league, LIV Golf. At the center of this storm has been Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf who helped found the league. However, according to reports, Norman is set to be replaced as CEO, with former Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment CEO Scott O’Neil expected to take over the position. While Norman is expected to remain with LIV Golf in a senior role, this change in leadership marks a significant development in the ongoing feud within pro golf.

Norman’s aggressive stance in support of LIV Golf has led to public feuds with the PGA Tour, its players, fans, and media outlets. His contentious relationship with PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy has been particularly noteworthy, with both men exchanging verbal jabs in the press. McIlroy has been openly critical of Norman’s leadership, calling for his removal as CEO in order to facilitate reconciliation within the sport. Despite this friction, a Framework Agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was announced in June 2023, signaling a potential ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.

Following the news of Norman’s impending departure, Scott O’Neil is poised to take the helm as CEO of LIV Golf. O’Neil brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as CEO of Merlin Entertainments. Sources indicate that the deal to appoint O’Neil as CEO is nearing completion, with an official announcement expected in the near future. Despite the leadership change, LIV Golf is still on track to kick off its 2025 season in Saudi Arabia in February, signaling that the league is moving forward amidst the shifting dynamics of the golfing world.

The transition from Norman to O’Neil at the helm of LIV Golf represents a pivotal moment for the league and the broader landscape of professional golf. With tensions beginning to ease between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, the appointment of a new CEO could provide an opportunity for reconciliation and collaboration within the sport. As O’Neil prepares to take on this leadership role, the golfing community will be watching closely to see how he navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead. Overall, the changing of the guard at LIV Golf marks a significant chapter in the ongoing evolution of professional golf and the efforts to bring unity to a divided sport.
