Reed Hughes, a 71-year-old golfer from Senatobia, Mississippi, participated in the 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship, marking what is likely his final shot on the PGA Tour. Despite struggling with aching knees and physical limitations, Hughes completed the tournament with a final score of 10 over par, finishing in 128th place. The tournament was a significant milestone for Hughes, as he was the oldest player in a PGA Tour event since Gary Player in 2009.

Hughes’ journey to the Sanderson Farms Championship began over 40 years ago when he played his first PGA Tour event in 1984. This year’s tournament marked his ninth PGA Tour event, 17 years after his last appearance in the 2007 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Despite the challenges of competing against much younger players, Hughes was grateful for the experience and the opportunity to showcase his skills on a national stage.

During his time at the tournament, Hughes received unexpected attention and praise from fans and spectators. One passerby even named him as her favorite player and expressed admiration for his performance. Despite the physical toll and physical limitations he faced, Hughes remained determined and focused on giving his best effort during the competition.

For Hughes, the best part of the experience was the culmination of his efforts and the relief of knowing that he had completed the tournament. Battling health issues, including shingles and aching fingers, Hughes persevered through the challenges to participate in the event. His dedication to the sport and passion for golf shone through as he reflected on his time at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

As a golf professional at the Grenada Golf and Racquet Club, Hughes will return to his duties after the tournament, including mowing greens and assisting club members. Despite the physical and mental strain of competing at a high level, Hughes remains grateful for the opportunity to showcase his skills and compete alongside younger, talented golfers.

Overall, Hughes’ experience at the Sanderson Farms Championship was a memorable and rewarding journey. Despite the physical challenges and limitations he faced, Hughes showcased his dedication to the sport and his determination to compete at the highest level. As he looks back on his time at the tournament, Hughes remains grateful for the support of fans, spectators, and fellow competitors who cheered him on and recognized his efforts.
