Robert MacIntyre Takes Lead at 2024 RBC Canadian Open with Father as Caddie After Acknowledging Possible Role in Struggles

Father knows best has been evident in the first 36 holes of the RBC Canadian Open for Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who is currently bogey-free with his dad, Dougie, serving as his emergency caddie. Dougie, a greenkeeper at Glencruitten Golf Course in Oban, Scotland, was quick to jump at the opportunity to caddie for his son, allowing them to spend some quality time together on the course. MacIntyre shot a 4-under 66 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club to take the early lead with a score of 10-under 130 after the second round.

MacIntyre had been using different caddies due to injuries and other reasons earlier in the season, but he decided to ask his father to step in for this tournament. This decision proved to be the right one as MacIntyre has been playing well, with his father learning on the fly as they navigate the course together. MacIntyre kept things simple for his dad, who he described as a good golfer, and provided him with a lightweight bag for the hilly Hamilton course.

The adjustment to playing on the PGA Tour has been challenging for MacIntyre, who has found it to be a lonely existence. Having his father by his side this week has been a great benefit both emotionally and strategically. MacIntyre has found success on the tour this season with three top-10 finishes, including a T-8 at the PGA Championship. He credits his recent strong play to an attitude adjustment and a realization that he might have been the problem holding him back.

The Canadian fans have embraced MacIntyre, who is a left-handed golfer, as one of their own, cheering him on as he climbs to the top of the leaderboard. As they navigate the course together, MacIntyre and his father share light-hearted moments, with Dougie jokingly mentioning negotiating a wage for his caddie duties. Overall, the father-son duo has formed a strong bond on the course, with MacIntyre appreciating the support and encouragement from his dad as he continues to compete at the highest level of golf.
