Rory McIlroy claims defeat at Troon was due to the wind

Rory McIlroy’s struggles in the Open Championship continued as he finished 11 over par after two rounds at Royal Troon. This disappointing performance came just five weeks after his tough loss in the US Open, adding to his major title drought. McIlroy admitted that his mind started drifting towards his upcoming holiday plans after his slim chances of making the cut vanished early on in the tournament.

The Northern Irishman cited difficulties in handling the windy conditions as a key factor in his poor performance at Royal Troon. He acknowledged that similar struggles with windy conditions at Augusta earlier in the year had also led to disappointing results. Despite feeling uncomfortable with some shots during the tournament, McIlroy managed to play decently in the later holes after his early struggles.

McIlroy’s rocky start included a triple-bogey on the fourth hole after getting stuck in heavy rough and experiencing difficulty advancing the ball. He continued to drop shots on the fifth and sixth holes before finding some stability with seven straight pars. An unexpected birdie on the 14th briefly lifted his spirits amidst the challenging conditions, leading to a moment of light-heartedness on the course.

Looking ahead, McIlroy remained optimistic despite his major setbacks at the Open Championship. He emphasized the importance of refocusing for upcoming events like the Olympics and the opportunity to compete for money list titles on both sides of the Atlantic. With several tournaments left in the year, McIlroy expressed his determination to reset and strive for success in the remaining competitions.

Overall, McIlroy’s disappointing performance at the Open Championship highlighted his struggles in adapting to challenging weather conditions and maintaining consistency throughout the tournament. Despite facing setbacks, he remained focused on the upcoming events and the opportunity to compete for prestigious titles. As McIlroy’s quest for a fifth major title extends into the next decade, fans will continue to support him in his journey towards success on the golf course.
