Rory McIlroy: Advocating for LIV Golf Player Inclusion on the PGA Tour

The ongoing rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has captured the attention of golf enthusiasts, and one of the sport’s most prominent figures, Rory McIlroy, has taken a firm stance amid the controversy. Currently ranked No. 2 in the world, McIlroy has consistently voiced his concerns regarding the LIV Golf Tour but is open to reconsidering the exclusion of its players from the PGA Tour.

McIlroy’s Position on LIV Golf Players

Although McIlroy has been a vocal critic of the LIV Tour, he recently indicated a willingness to welcome back LIV players if it benefits the overall strength of the PGA Tour. Specifically, he mentioned Bryson DeChambeau as an example of a player he would support bringing back.

“I think they’ve already paid their consequence … if it made the overall Tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be okay with it,” McIlroy stated, highlighting a shift to a more inclusive perspective.

Rory McIlroy’s Recent Achievements

In addition to his advocacy, McIlroy had a remarkable year in 2025, securing three major wins, including his crowning achievement at the Masters. He also took on the role of captain for the European team in the Ryder Cup, leading them to victory against the American team. These accomplishments have solidified his status as one of golf’s elite players.

A Loyal PGA Tour Competitor

Since joining the PGA Tour in 2007, McIlroy has amassed an impressive portfolio, including five major championships:

  • 2011 U.S. Open
  • 2012 PGA Championship
  • 2014 PGA Championship
  • 2014 Open Championship
  • 2025 Masters

While the LIV Golf Tour emerged in 2022, backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, it has been a subject of contention due to its high salaries and faster formats. The tour has drawn top talents like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson but has faced significant scrutiny for its connection to Saudi Arabia’s human rights issues, often labeled as "sportswashing."

In 2024, McIlroy firmly denied reports claiming he was offered an $850 million contract and equity share to join the LIV Golf Tour, with his agent labeling it as “fake news.”

Conclusion

Rory McIlroy remains a steadfast figure in the world of golf, continuously balancing his loyalty to the PGA Tour with a willingness to adapt to the changing landscape of professional golf. As discussions around player inclusivity continue, McIlroy’s perspective may pave the way for future collaborations between the PGA and LIV Tours.
