Scottie Scheffler’s Journey Back from Injury: Hand Issue Still Impacting World No. 1’s Play

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, is in the process of returning to his dominant form after a hand injury interrupted his offseason training. The injury, sustained while making ravioli on Christmas day, forced Scheffler to miss the first month of the 2025 PGA Tour season. This unexpected setback caused bookmakers to adjust their lines for early-season tournaments, as Scheffler had been the favorite in nearly every event he entered in 2024.

Despite not performing at the same level he did in 2024 when he won seven PGA Tour events, Scheffler has still posted impressive results in 2025. He has three top-11 finishes in five tournaments, with his best result being a tie for third place at the Genesis Invitational. However, signs of frustration have started to show, particularly in his putting statistics, which have been a weakness since his return to competition.

The main issue for Scheffler now relates to strength and mobility rather than pain. While his hand no longer causes discomfort, achieving a full range of motion remains a challenge. The period of inactivity due to the injury has led to physical challenges that affected his overall performance. His inability to perform his usual gym exercises has compounded the recovery process.

On the mental side, Scheffler acknowledges the frustration that comes with not meeting his own standards. Even small declines in performance feel magnified for a player who dominated the sport as he did in 2024. His ball-striking, traditionally a strength of his game, has been lacking in precision. This adjustment period is testing his patience as he works to recapture his championship form.

Looking ahead, Scheffler is optimistic that his game is showing signs of improvement as his hand approaches full strength. He views the upcoming Houston event as his final competitive opportunity before defending his green jacket at Augusta National in April. Scheffler emphasizes the value of the learning process in his comeback and takes pride in certain aspects of his early-season performance.

While matching his extraordinary 2024 campaign may be challenging, Scheffler is focused on gradual improvement through time and repetition. His hand is nearing full recovery, but the effects of missed practice and gym time are still lingering. The adjustment to proper golf shape requires patience and persistence, traits that Scheffler is working on as he continues to work towards returning to peak form.
