Should you adjust your tee height when hitting a draw versus a fade shot?

When it comes to tee height in golf, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Tee height is a common topic of conversation among golfers, with many players wondering what the proper tee height should be. In a recent article, GOLF Teacher to Watch Derek Swoboda shared some helpful insights on how tee height can impact shot-shaping, particularly when hitting draws and fades off the tee.

For golfers looking to experiment with purposely hitting draws and fades off the tee, understanding how tee height influences these shots is crucial. When the tee height is lower to the ground, the ball is more likely to impact the bottom half of the clubface, resulting in a fade pattern. Additionally, lower tee heights can change the angle of attack, making it ideal for playing a power fade. On the other hand, higher tee heights allow for higher launch angles and less backspin, resulting in a more natural draw to your ball-flight.

In addition to tee height, other factors such as ball position and foot positioning can also influence shot-shaping. For example, the position of the ball in your stance can act as a “path-shifter,” allowing the club to contact the ball at different moments in the swing arc. Similarly, the position of your feet can affect the swing path, with the front foot back moving the path more out-to-in and the trail foot back moving the path more in-to-out. By understanding and implementing these principles, golfers can have more control over the shape of their shots and ensure proper contact on the clubface.

To help golfers improve their game and practice different shot shapes, products like the Rukket Sports Pathfinder Impact Mat™ can be beneficial. This 2-in-1 golf swing training mat combines the features of an impact mat and a swing path trainer, allowing players to quickly identify and correct common swing problems like hooks and slices. The mat tracks club face alignment and helps ensure clean contact with the ball, while the foam pylons can be used to practice hitting straighter shots or draw/fade shots.

Overall, tee height plays a crucial role in shot-shaping in golf. By adjusting tee height based on the desired shot shape and understanding how it impacts the angle of attack, launch angle, and clubface contact, golfers can improve their ability to execute draws and fades off the tee. Pairing this knowledge with other factors such as ball position and foot positioning can further enhance a golfer’s control over the shape of their shots. Investing in training aids like the Rukket Sports Pathfinder Impact Mat™ can also help players practice different shot shapes and improve their overall game.
