The 2024 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas provided a unique challenge for PGA Tour players due to extreme weather conditions. High winds, occasionally gusting at 50 mph, forced a four-hour delay in tee times on Friday. Despite these challenging conditions, many players managed to post rounds under par, showcasing their ability to adapt and succeed in adverse circumstances.

Davis Thompson, who fired rounds of 66-68 (-8), emphasized the importance of having a positive attitude in tough conditions. As a resident of Sea Island, Ga., Thompson is accustomed to playing in the wind and shared his strategy of focusing on hitting greens and staying patient. J.J. Spaun echoed the sentiment, highlighting the need to hit the ball solidly to control its flight in blustery conditions.

Tips for success in windy rounds of golf were shared by Kellie Stenzel, a Top 100 Teacher, and Nick Dimengo. Players like Spaun emphasized the importance of being accepting of difficult conditions and avoiding frustration when dealing with gusty winds. Greyson Sigg also stressed the need to focus on one shot at a time and accept the challenges presented by the weather.

Despite the challenging conditions on Friday, the forecast for Saturday is much-improved, with temperatures rising into the 70s and wind speeds expected to max out at 15 mph. This shift in weather conditions will provide a more favorable environment for players to finish the second round and begin the third round after the cut is made.

Jessica Marksbury, a Golf.com Editor and former member of Columbia’s inaugural class of female varsity golfers, provides insight into the players’ experiences at the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open. Her expertise in the game allows her to analyze the strategies and mindsets of players facing extreme weather conditions and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude in challenging circumstances.

The players at the Shriners Children’s Open demonstrated resilience and adaptability in facing the high winds and difficult playing conditions. Their ability to stay focused, accept the challenges presented by the weather, and maintain a positive attitude played a crucial role in their success on the course. As they continue to navigate the tournament, these players will showcase their skills and mental fortitude in overcoming challenging conditions to compete at the highest level.
