Sydnee Michaels makes a grand comeback as a mother and pageant queen

Sydnee Michaels, a part-time player on the LPGA, recently qualified for her seventh U.S. Women’s Open after an eight-year gap. This achievement held special significance for Michaels, coming shortly after the passing of her father, who was a significant influence on her golf career. Michaels, the youngest of eight children, transitioned from figure skating to golf at a young age under her father’s guidance.
After gaining full LPGA status in 2012, Michaels faced challenges when she became pregnant in 2017, leading to a difficult 2018 season that saw her lose full status. Despite back surgery and an identity crisis, Michaels competed in beauty pageants and launched ISLA Sport, an athletic apparel company. She has continued to play part-time on the tour while balancing her roles as a mother and entrepreneur.
Michaels, who currently resides in south Florida, teaches golf at High Ridge Country Club. She looks back on the hardships faced during her early motherhood years, highlighting the tour’s improved maternity policies for players. Michaels’s determination to succeed on the tour stems from her desire to showcase her competitive abilities and potentially earn a place on the Solheim Cup team through a strong performance at the U.S. Women’s Open.
On a personal level, Michaels continues to draw inspiration from her daughter Isla, who supports her mother’s golfing endeavors wholeheartedly. The absence of a sponsor for the LPGA’s daycare program at the U.S. Women’s Open reflects the ongoing challenges faced by players balancing family responsibilities with professional golf careers. Despite being ranked 1,167th in the world, Michaels retains optimism about her ability to compete at a high level and potentially secure a spot on the Solheim Cup team.
Looking ahead, Michaels envisions herself competing on the tour for the next few years while maintaining a balance with her family and business ventures. As she pursues her passion for golf, Michaels hopes to achieve success on her own terms and leave a lasting impact on the sport. Her journey exemplifies the dedication and resilience required to navigate the competitive world of professional golf while embracing the roles of motherhood and entrepreneurship.
