Team Dinner at Olympics 2024 Leads to Nicolai Hojgaard’s Impressive 62 and a Shot at the Medal Stand

Playing in the Olympics can be a challenging experience, especially for young golfers like Nicolai Højgaard, who found himself in a completely different world from his usual day job. Seeking wisdom and guidance, Højgaard turned to Team Denmark captain Thomas Bjorn for advice. Instead of offering golf tips, Bjorn took him to a famous French restaurant near the team hotel, providing a sense of normalcy in an otherwise heightened, non-normal week.

The advice seemed to work, as Højgaard went on to shoot a course-record tying 62 in the third round, putting him in medal contention. The round was highlighted by a chip-in birdie on the third hole and five front-nine birdies, followed by a 31 on the closing nine, including an eagle on the par-5 14th. This performance was the best Bjorn has seen from Højgaard, who has four professional wins but no top-10 finishes in majors to date.

Højgaard credited his twin brother Rasmus, who was runner-up at the Cazoo Open de France in 2022, for inspiring him and providing insights into how to handle both the course and the pressure of competition. By starting with early birdies and focusing on hitting fairways and greens, Højgaard was able to control his game and stay calm throughout the round.

For Bjorn, creating a sense of normalcy for the players is key to helping them perform at their best. By taking them out for dinner and providing a familiar environment, he hopes to build the same kind of camaraderie and support that has led to success in team events like the Ryder Cup. Despite the pressure of the Olympics, Bjorn believes that giving players the space to focus and relax is crucial to their success.

Overall, the experience at the Olympics has been positive for Højgaard and his teammate Thorbjørn Olesen, who also had a strong round in the third round. Both players have shown their ability to adapt and excel in high-pressure situations, with Bjorn’s guidance playing a key role in their success. As they continue to compete for medals, their focus and determination are evident, thanks in part to the support and wisdom of their more experienced team captain.

In the end, Bjorn’s efforts to create a supportive and familiar environment for the players have paid off, with Højgaard and Olesen performing at their best when it matters most. With one more round to go, the Danish team is in a good position to contend for medals, thanks to a combination of skill, strategy, and a touch of normalcy in an extraordinary setting. Bjorn’s commitment to helping his players succeed has been a driving force behind their success, and his efforts are sure to be remembered as they compete on one of golf’s biggest stages.
