In the first week of 2025, the golf world witnessed a return to competition for some of the top pros in the sport after a relatively quiet LIV hot-stove season. Key players made significant offseason changes, such as Max Homa switching to Cobra clubs, Puma shoes, and Lululemon clothes. Homa also enlisted a new coach and temporarily hired Jordan Spieth’s caddie for the week. Viktor Hovland also made headlines with a swing coach change, a broken toe, and a contract extension with J Lindeberg.

The apparel space saw Jason Day and Malbon returning for Year 2, with Day sporting unique “athletic scrubs chic” on the course. Akshay Bhatia signed with Travis Mathew, adding a mustard stain-themed clothing line to his wardrobe. Several pros introduced new clubs in competition, but Hideki Matsuyama’s winning putter garnered the most attention. Matsuyama’s center-shafted Scotty Cameron prototype helped him achieve a record-breaking performance at the Sentry.

Other notable updates include PGA Tour winner Maverick McNealy becoming an equipment free agent, Collin Morikawa focusing on a “leave-it-all-out-there” mindset, and Tiger Woods emphasizing intense focus during rounds. Will Zalatoris made adjustments to his body, mind, and putting game ahead of the new season, while Tom Hoge celebrated becoming a new father. Justin Thomas decided to go coach-free in 2025, seeking to play with a “pissed-off golf” mentality.

The golf landscape continues to evolve, with changes extending beyond player performances. The PGA Tour’s agronomy practices have significantly improved over the years, providing pristine playing conditions week after week. In terms of player performances, Hideki Matsuyama’s record-breaking victory at the Sentry set a high benchmark for the season. Other notable players like Ludvig Aberg, Sungjae Im, and Collin Morikawa also showcased promising form early in the season.

In other golf news, the golfing community mourned the loss of Steve DiMeglio, a longtime USA Today writer, who passed away after a brave battle with cancer. Tiger Woods secured the Player Impact Program (PIP) win, earning a substantial prize despite limited competitive appearances. Phil Mickelson announced ambitious plans for his new YouTube channel, including match series and instructional content. Additionally, nine new or renovated public courses were highlighted for golf enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, all eyes are on the debut of the TGL arena, with players showing increasing interest and enthusiasm for the innovative concept. The upcoming TGL matches will provide a glimpse into the potential success and uniqueness of this new format. As the golfing community embraces various changes and developments, the sport continues to captivate audiences with its dynamic narratives and emerging talents.
