Adding power to your golf swing is an essential goal for many players. Whether through using specialized training aids, hitting the gym, or getting fitted for the latest driver, there are numerous strategies available. However, one of the most effective methods involves making subtle changes to your swing technique.

Understanding Power in Your Swing

While there’s no single magic move to instantly increase your driving distance, understanding how power is generated during the swing can lead to meaningful improvements. By implementing specific power moves into your swing, you could achieve greater distances than you ever thought possible.

This was highlighted in our most popular power tip of 2025, demonstrated by GOLF Top 100 Teacher Joe Plecker.

Our Most-Popular Power Tip of 2025

Plecker’s teaching philosophy revolves around incorporating dynamic exercises into golf swing instruction. One of the standout drills he shared is a modified version of the "step-swing" drill, which he adapted during his recent visit to Korea.

The Step-Swing Drill: Step-by-Step

  1. Equipment Needed: All you need is an alignment stick or an old shaft you can maneuver easily.
  2. Initial Setup: Grip the stick as you would a golf club and assume your stance.
  3. The Motion:
    • Start with the club slightly in front of you.
    • Swing back and bring your lead leg behind your trail leg.
    • Fully complete the backswing and then swing through, ensuring to create a whoosh sound as you pass through the impact zone.
  4. Creating Coil:
    • Once you reach the finish position, pull the stick back and again stagger your lead leg behind your trail leg.
    • This motion helps you create separation between your upper and lower body—essential for generating clubhead speed in the downswing.

Plecker emphasizes the importance of rhythm in this exercise. “When you do this several times, you’ll start to find your cadence. A consistent rhythm leads to greater control.”

Enhancing Your Swing

After practicing the drill a few times, pick up your club and make some swings while maintaining the feeling of shifting your weight toward the target before completing your backswing. By mastering this weight shift, you’ll find you can generate more clubhead speed with less effort, translating into longer drives.

Conclusion

Incorporating this simple yet effective weight-shift drill into your practice routine may unlock new levels of power in your golf swing. Give it a try and experience the difference firsthand.
