Team USA emerged victorious in a thrilling battle against their European counterparts at The Cairns Cup, disability golf’s premier match-play event. Despite rainy conditions at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Michigan, Team USA managed to secure back-to-back victories, with Brandon Williams sinking the winning putt to claim a narrow victory. The match finished 12.5-11.5 in favor of the home side after three grueling days of golf played in challenging 30-degree heat.

The competition kicked off with day one seeing a 4-2 lead for Team USA after the foursomes. However, Europe fought back on day two, reducing the deficit to just a single point. With the hosts still requiring 5.5 points to retain the cup and six for an outright victory on day three, Rutger Pranger of the Netherlands leveled the scores by winning the first match of the day.

Despite an interruption in play for forecasted lightning, Team USA weathered the storm and made a comeback by putting a flurry of red on the scoreboard in the early afternoon. Brandon Williams, who sank the winning putt, expressed his joy at securing his country’s win on home soil, remarking on the amazing experience and the dream come true moment. The event highlighted the growing significance of disability golf and provided a platform for the sport to expand and reach a wider audience.

The Cairns Cup showcased the talents of golfers with disabilities and emphasized the competitive nature of matchplay golf. The two teams put on a stunning show of skill and determination throughout the tournament, captivating audiences with their exceptional performances. The event underscored the increasing visibility and recognition of disability golf, paving the way for further growth and development in the sport.

Looking ahead, The Cairns Cup will return to Europe in 2026, providing another opportunity for golfers with disabilities to compete on the international stage. The event has become a key fixture in the disability golf calendar, attracting top talents from both sides of the Atlantic and contributing to the global promotion of the sport.
