Thomas unlocking his game at TPC Sawgrass

The Players Championship: Where Commitment Separates the Masters from the Pretenders

I’ve covered 15 Masters Tournaments, but I’ll tell you what—there’s something uniquely revealing about The Players Championship that even Augusta National can’t quite replicate. It’s not the Island Green, though that certainly gets the headlines. It’s not Pete Dye’s design, though it’s brilliant. It’s something more fundamental: TPC Sawgrass doesn’t allow you to fake it. Not for 72 holes. Not here.

That’s the real story emerging from Thursday’s opening round, and it’s worth paying attention to, because what we’re seeing is a clarifying moment about where several players stand as we head into the season’s most important stretch.

Justin Thomas’s Reset Moment

Having caddied back in the ’90s, I learned that sometimes the most important shot of a tournament isn’t the one that wins it—it’s the one where a player resets himself mentally. That’s exactly what Justin Thomas did when play was suspended mid-round on Thursday.

Thomas arrived at The Players fresh off a brutal outing at Bay Hill, where he posted consecutive 79s. That’s the kind of thing that can get into your head fast, especially when you’re trying to find form after a back procedure in the offseason. But here’s what struck me about his resurgence: he didn’t just play well on the back nine after the weather delay. He played with purpose. Three birdies in his final seven holes, all from inside 10 feet. That’s not luck—that’s a player who took the mental break and returned with clarity.

“It helps. I kind of had a deep breath to myself walking off 9 and even, like I said, internally, ‘I needed that.’ I feel like I’ve been playing well at home. I feel like I’m doing the right thing swinging well. I feel confident with things. But again, until it happens in competition, it’s kind of hard to fully buy into you’re ready.”

That quote tells you everything about where Thomas is right now. He’s not claiming he’s arrived. He’s acknowledging he needed a moment to trust what he’s been working on. One shot back after 18 holes is significant for a two-time major champion who understands what The Players demands.

Scottie’s Driver Troubles Should Concern You

In my 35 years covering this tour, I’ve learned to read leaderboards carefully, especially when the world No. 1 finishes even par. That’s not where Scottie Scheffler usually lives, and the reason tells us something important about what’s happening with his game right now.

Seven missed fairways. All to the right. The driver—an older model that replaced a new one he couldn’t trust—is clearly not cooperating. What makes this noteworthy isn’t that he had a rough day; it’s the consistency of the misses. In my experience, when a player’s miss pattern becomes that predictable, it usually signals something mechanical that needs immediate attention.

“I have seen some improvements in the new driver. It’s just, I haven’t been able to trust it in all the different shots that I hit, especially off the tee.”

That’s honest self-assessment from Scheffler, but here’s the thing: TPC Sawgrass is only going to punish those right misses more severely as the week goes on. The rough will thicken. The stakes will increase. If he hasn’t solved this by Friday, we could see a defending champion struggle in ways we haven’t witnessed from him in quite some time.

Collin Theegala’s Quiet Brilliance

Not everyone is going to notice what Collin Theegala did on Thursday, which is precisely why I’m bringing it up. One shot back in a leaderboard full of major champions, and the one-time tour winner got there through sheer shot-making brilliance.

An eagle from a hole-out, sure. That makes the highlight reel. But it was the way he handled adversity on those back nine holes that caught my eye. Par saves from positions that make most players want to quit? That’s not accident. That’s a player who understands Pete Dye’s personality and refuses to panic when the course punches back. Theegala is one of those guys I’ve been watching develop, and performances like this suggest he’s arrived at that moment where his talent is matching his consistency.

Rory’s Rust Is Real

Rory McIlroy shot 74. No winner at The Players has carded that in the opening round. That’s not just a stat—that’s context. Having covered McIlroy for years now, I know his game well enough to recognize when something’s genuinely off versus when he’s just grinding. Thursday felt like the former.

Two flubbed chips on par-5s? Multiple left misses with the driver early in his round? That’s not the Rory we’ve seen at his best. The early rest, combined with a quick range session, apparently wasn’t enough to shake off the rust from his premature departure at Bay Hill.

The Bigger Picture

What I think matters most about Round 1 at TPC Sawgrass isn’t any single leaderboard position. It’s what the course continues to reveal about where players stand mentally and physically. Five rounds of 80 or higher Thursday? That’s not the course being unfair—that’s the course being honest. TPC Sawgrass doesn’t care about your rankings or your résumé. It demands commitment on every single shot.

“It’s one of those unique tests where it doesn’t favor any particular type of game, and it’s definitely not one that you stand up on the tee and try and swing as hard as you can. The shot value is really important.”

Maverick McNealy nailed it with that assessment, and it’s why this week matters so much as a measuring stick heading toward Augusta. The players who can navigate TPC Sawgrass with discipline and shot-making will arrive at Augusta National with confidence. The ones who can’t will spend the next two weeks wondering if they’re ready.

We’ve got three more rounds to see how this story develops. Based on what I saw Thursday, several players are writing compelling chapters already.
