Improving your wedge play can drastically impact your overall score on the golf course. Major champion Justin Thomas shares some insights on how to dial in your wedge shots from within 100 yards. Thomas emphasizes the importance of having a masterful touch with your wedges and putter to give yourself a chance to score, even after misfiring a tee shot. In a video featured on Titleist’s YouTube channel, Thomas breaks down key aspects of hitting wedge shots from various distances and lies.

For an 85-yard shot from the fairway, Thomas advises players to determine their ball flight based on factors like wind and backstop. He recommends flying the ball slightly past the target to account for spin control and the effect of the wind. Thomas emphasizes the importance of being able to control spin on wedge shots, highlighting the need to be able to add or take away spin as necessary for each shot.

Moving on to an 85-yard shot from the rough, Thomas stresses the importance of reading the lie to determine the appropriate club choice and shot type. He explains how different lies can affect the outcome of the shot, with some lies requiring more spin and height to clear obstacles. Thomas encourages players to understand how lies can impact their shot-making decisions and adjust accordingly.

In a challenging 35-yard wedge shot over a bunker, Thomas demonstrates how to generate backspin by hitting down on the ball. He cautions against the common mistake of leaning back and scooping the ball, which can result in poor contact and inconsistent spin. Thomas advises focusing on the angle of attack to produce the desired backspin and achieve better control on wedge shots.

Reading the lie is a crucial part of executing successful wedge shots, according to Thomas. He explains how the lie can significantly impact the difficulty of the shot and shares his strategy for playing shots from different lie conditions. By adapting to uphill or downhill lies, players can improve their ability to navigate challenging situations and confidently approach the ball with a clear plan.

To excel at wedge shots from under 100 yards, Thomas emphasizes the importance of having a consistent process, trusting it, and maintaining confidence in your abilities. He stresses the need for players to be comfortable and confident in their approach to each shot, which can lead to better execution and improved performance on the course. By following Thomas’s tips and practicing with dedication, golfers can enhance their wedge play and lower their scores.
