Three things you overlooked in Open’s early morning hours

Royal Troon, the site of the 152nd Open Championship, kicked off on a chilly and windy Thursday. Former Open champions Justin Leonard and Todd Hamilton struggled, with Leonard carding an 80 and Hamilton shooting an 82. However, the real excitement came early in the tournament with two leaderboard ejections. Younghan Song, who qualified via the Korea Open, was leading early but faltered on the 11th hole, ultimately finishing the day at even par. Matt Wallace also fell victim to the challenging course, dropping from four under to one under after a triple bogey.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau also faced a tough start to his Open Championship. Despite being asked earlier in the week about overpowering the course, DeChambeau struggled with multiple bogeys and a double on the par-5 6th hole. His opening 42 might hinder his chances of making the weekend at Royal Troon. The opposite wind direction added another layer of difficulty for players, with the back nine playing longer into the wind. Alex Noren, who carded a two-under 69, emphasized the challenging conditions players faced on the course.

As the tournament progressed, the wind and rain continued to pose challenges for players. The prevailing wind direction made scoring difficult, especially on the back nine, which played significantly longer due to the wind direction. Even top players had to adjust their strategies to avoid fairway bunkers and navigate the tough conditions on the course. Noren’s clubhouse-leading performance showcased the importance of managing the course effectively to score under par.

Despite the challenging conditions, players like Noren remained optimistic about the tournament’s outcome. Noren believed that despite the tricky playing conditions, players would still be able to shoot under par. As the tournament unfolds, players will need to adapt to the changing weather conditions and course challenges to secure a competitive position in the leaderboard. The unpredictability of links golf adds an element of excitement and uncertainty to the Open Championship, making it a thrilling event for fans and players alike.

The challenging start to the Open Championship set the stage for an unpredictable and exciting tournament at Royal Troon. From leaderboard ejections to top players struggling with the course conditions, every round promises to be full of surprises and thrilling moments. As players battle the elements and navigate the tough course, fans can expect to witness intense competition and exceptional golf skills on display. The Open Championship at Royal Troon is shaping up to be a memorable event filled with drama, excitement, and exceptional gameplay.
