Tom Kim’s pursuit of an Olympic medal has a challenging subplot

Tom Kim and Ben An, two professional golfers from South Korea, face the unique challenge of mandatory military service before they reach the age of 35. Kim, at 22, has a less urgent deadline than An, who is 32 and lives in Orlando. Winning an Olympic medal grants an exemption from military service in South Korea, a country with a strict enforcement of conscription. This exemption has been a topic of debate and controversy, with some believing that service should be mandatory while others argue for higher exemption standards. The issue of military service for athletes in South Korea has surfaced at previous Olympics, sparking discussions about revising exemption categories.

In 2018, the soccer world faced a dilemma concerning Heung-Min Son’s eligibility to play for Tottenham Football Club due to his military service obligations. Similar debates arose during the Asian Games, where winning a Gold medal grants an exemption. The introduction of eSports in the Asian Games in 2023 reignited discussions about exemptions for athletes. Despite the ongoing debate, South Korean athletes like Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim have managed to earn exemptions by winning Gold in international competitions, showcasing the impact of sporting achievements on military service obligations.

Sang-moon Bae’s experience on the PGA Tour serves as a cautionary tale, as his career suffered a setback after mandatory military service. Bae’s rankings plummeted after his return to pro golf, highlighting the disruptive nature of military service on athletes’ careers. Sami Valimaki, a golfer from Finland, also underwent mandatory military service before his professional career, emphasizing the challenges athletes face in balancing military obligations with sports careers. Despite the obstacles, Valimaki believes that military service can have positive impacts on individuals and their countries.

Tom Kim’s impressive performance at the Olympics, where he is currently tied for bronze, has brought attention to his potential exemption from military service. While Kim remains focused on his game and the tournament, questions about the impact of a potential exemption weigh on his mind. Kim remains optimistic about his future, believing that success in golf will ultimately determine his fate. The uncertainty surrounding military service exemptions for athletes adds an additional layer of complexity to their professional careers and personal aspirations. Despite the challenges they face, athletes like Kim and An continue to strive for success in their sports while navigating the responsibilities of their home country’s conscription laws.
