Tom McKibbin, a young golfer from Holywood Golf Club, finished the DP World Tour season strong with T10 and T11 finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, earning his PGA Tour card. McKibbin described the end of the season as “stressful,” but thanks to his performance, he is now gearing up to compete in the United States with dual DPWT-PGA Tour membership, with the goal of taking his career to the next level. As he turns 22 next month, McKibbin will kick off his 2025 season in Abu Dhabi at the Team Cup, aiming to catch the eye of Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald and potentially secure a spot on Team Europe.
Making his Ryder Cup debut next year is a “massive goal” for McKibbin, who is part of the 10-man GB&I team for January’s Team Cup. Having watched the Ryder Cup since 2012, when Europe staged a comeback at Medinah, McKibbin has dreamt of being part of the team one day. He expressed excitement at the prospect of starting the year by representing his team and mingling with top players in the sport. One player he could potentially join on the team is fellow Holywood GC prodigy Rory McIlroy, who has been an inspiration and mentor to McKibbin over the years.
McKibbin, who won the 2023 Porsche European Open, admitted that he prefers parkland golf over links golf and believes his game aligns well with US-style courses. He plans to focus on playing in the US next year, where he has enjoyed success in the past. With aspirations of making the Ryder Cup team and securing victories on the PGA Tour, McKibbin recognizes the potential for success after seeing fellow DP World Tour players like Robert MacIntyre and Matthieu Pavon excel on the US circuit this year. MacIntyre, for instance, won the Canadian Open and Scottish Open after earning his PGA Tour card via the DP World Tour.
Excited about the upcoming opportunities, McKibbin is set to play in the Joburg Open and South African Open to wrap up the year before shifting his focus to the Team Cup and his PGA Tour journey. The young golfer is grateful for the support and encouragement he has received from his idol, Rory McIlroy, who expressed pride in McKibbin’s achievements after earning his PGA Tour card. McKibbin’s consistency and talent have caught the attention of the golfing world, and he is determined to continue improving and reaching new heights in his career. With a strong foundation and a bright future ahead, McKibbin is poised to make waves in the golfing world and potentially fulfill his dreams of competing in prestigious events like the Ryder Cup.
