The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas kicked off with Matt Wallace leading the pack after the first round. Wallace’s 8-under 63 gave him a one-stroke advantage as darkness halted play for the day. Wallace attributed his strong start to focusing on his game and not getting caught up in the outcome. After a disappointing season, Wallace felt a turnaround was imminent following some solid play at prior events.

Chesson Hadley also had a stellar round, carding a 7-under 64 with the most birdies of the day. His performance was fueled by momentum from a solid finish at the Zurich Classic. Defending champion Jason Day posted a respectable 5-under 66 and acknowledged the need to continue playing at a high level to contend for the title again. Work with his Dallas-based instructor was a mixed bag for Day, as he wrestled with the temptation to overanalyze his swing.

Local favorite Jordan Spieth had a mixed day, starting strong but faltering towards the end of his round. Spieth acknowledged the need to pick up the pace and shoot low scores to stay competitive in the tournament. Rookie Raul Pereda delivered the highlight of the day with a hole-in-one at the 236-yard par-3 seventh hole. It was his first ace on Tour and sixth in his lifetime, showcasing the talent and excitement of young players on the PGA Tour.

The tournament saw a delayed start due to rain, resulting in preferred lies on the fairways for the opening round. The soft conditions and lack of wind led to low scores, with birdies aplenty for the players. Hadley’s five consecutive birdies and Wallace’s career-low round were standout moments in an action-packed day of golf. The competition is expected to intensify as the tournament progresses, with players like Day and Spieth looking to make a move up the leaderboard.

Overall, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson got off to an exciting start with plenty of birdies, a hole-in-one, and strong performances from the field. Players like Wallace, Hadley, and Pereda shone on the first day, setting the stage for an intriguing battle for the title. With favorable conditions and a competitive field, fans can expect more thrilling moments and low scores as the tournament unfolds. Stay tuned for updates and highlights as the action continues at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.
