Top teacher says shaping shots requires one critical element

Learning how to shape your golf shots is an essential skill to have if you want to improve your game on the course. GOLF Top 100 Teacher Mark Blackburn explains the importance of dialing in your ball position when trying to shape your golf shots. During a lesson with former pro golfer Veronica Felibert, Blackburn had the author, Nick Dimengo, do a “Simon says” drill to help improve his skills and confidence on the course.

Shaping golf shots can be intimidating for many golfers, but with the right guidance and practice, it can be a valuable skill to have in your arsenal. By focusing on fundamentals like ball position, golfers can improve their ability to shape their shots and ultimately become better ball-strikers. Blackburn emphasizes the importance of matching your ball position with your preferred shot shape to achieve success on the course.

When trying to shape a draw, Blackburn recommends placing the ball further back in your stance to allow the club to approach the ball from the inside. By favoring the middle to slightly back ball position with a 7-iron, golfers can produce a draw by closing the face to the path at impact. Conversely, if you’re looking to shape a fade, the ball should be further forward in your stance to facilitate the club’s motion from outside-in.

It’s essential to remember that simply positioning the ball correctly won’t guarantee the desired shot shape. Golfers must also manage their club path and maintain control of the clubface through impact to achieve the desired ball flight. By practicing proper ball position and club path management, golfers can expand their range of shots and potentially lower their scores on the course.

In conclusion, shaping golf shots requires a combination of proper ball positioning, club path management, and clubface control. By mastering these fundamental aspects of the game, golfers can improve their ability to shape their shots and ultimately become better ball-strikers. With the guidance of top teachers like Mark Blackburn, golfers can elevate their game and see improvements in their performance on the course. Consider incorporating these tips into your practice routine to enhance your golf skills and achieve success on the course.
