The midway point of the Women’s Open saw the cut fall at +8, with the leader at four-under par. World number one Nelly Korda was unable to recover from her opening 80 and missed the weekend by two shots. Only Minjee Lee remains truly in contention among the world’s best players. The course preparation at the US Open in 2024 at Lancaster Country Club seems to be elevating players to the stature of the world’s best, as players like Korda, Rose Zhang, and Lydia Ko missed the cut, while others find themselves trailing by nine shots or more.

During the weekend, viewers and attendees will get to know players like Wichanee Meechai, Andrea Lee, Wei-Ling Hsu, and the amateur player Asterisk Talley. The US Women’s Open in 2024 is expected to unveil new talent rather than being a coronation of a repeat champion. The nature of major championship golf allows for the unexpected and unknown to shine, unlike team sports where known commodities lead to victory. Notable amateurs competing include Catherine Park, Megan Schofill, and Asterisk Talley, who will be battling for the low amateur medal.

A number of top golfers failed to make the weekend cut, including defending champion Allison Corpuz, Nelly Korda, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson, Leona Maguire, and Rose Zhang. The tournament at Lancaster is setting the stage for a new champion to emerge, similar to how In-Gee Chun claimed her first major victory at the same venue. As Minjee Lee and Yuka Saso head into the weekend in contention for the title, the championship remains wide open.

Wichanee Meechai, a golfer with limited success on the US LPGA tour, has managed to make her presence felt at the US Women’s Open with her consistent play. Despite some bogeys, Meechai has shown that she has the potential to hang around in the tournament with her stellar ball-striking abilities. Another player to keep an eye on is Andrea Lee, who has been making strides towards a major victory with solid performances, including a strong showing in the first two rounds of the Open.

The unexpected and unknown nature of major championship golf has provided an opportunity for amateurs to showcase their talents alongside seasoned professionals. Adela Cernousek’s ability to make the weekend cut after a challenging second round highlights the resilience and potential of amateur players at the US Women’s Open. The competition among amateurs for the low amateur medal adds an additional layer of excitement to the tournament, showcasing the depth of talent in women’s golf.

As the weekend approaches, the focus will be on players like Minjee Lee and Wichanee Meechai, who have shown resilience and skill in the first two rounds of the US Women’s Open. The battle for the championship remains wide open, with several contenders vying for the title. The unpredictable nature of major championship golf ensures that viewers will be treated to a display of skill and determination from both experienced professionals and emerging talents in the final rounds of the tournament.
