Nick Bienz, a 27-year-old part-time employee at Golf Galaxy in Indianapolis, secured a spot in the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit after winning a playoff in a Monday qualifier. Despite being scheduled to work on Thursday morning, Bienz will be teeing off at 2:22 p.m. ET. He has not yet informed his boss, but his colleagues have been supportive. Bienz shot 65 in the qualifying round and celebrated prematurely with a beer before realizing he had to compete in a playoff.

During the playoff, Bienz faced eight holes before securing his place in the tournament. After the chaotic day, he received overwhelming support from fans, including financial assistance via Venmo. Despite receiving offers for sponsorships, Bienz still hasn’t secured one and is unsure of the logistics involved in getting a logo on his shirt. Golf Galaxy, his employer, provided him with a new bag bearing their logo for the tournament. He also met Kevin Kisner, who joked about being his ‘beer-drinking buddy.’

Bienz had previously attempted to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Tour Latinoamerica, and Mackenzie Tour without success. However, his recent form has been impressive, winning a local tournament in June. He plans to reassess his career trajectory after his wedding next May, depending on his performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. With a $9.2 million purse on the line, success in the tournament could open new doors for Bienz in the world of professional golf.

The unexpected turn of events has left Bienz uncertain about his future, with the potential to pursue his dream of playing professionally or settling into a more traditional job role. Despite the uncertainty, he remains grateful for the opportunity to compete at a PGA Tour event and is focused on making the most of the experience. Fans and fellow professionals have rallied around Bienz, offering support and encouragement as he navigates this exciting but challenging time in his career.
