Urban Meyer, a former football coach, participated in the 2024 Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. In an interview published in the May 2024 issue of GOLF, he discussed his love for golf and his experiences playing with golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. They share a common love for Ohio, where they both found success, as well as a passion for the game of golf. Meyer listed his top five favorite courses, with Augusta National being his favorite, followed by Wade Hampton Golf Club, Calusa Pines, Oakmont, and Pebble Beach.

Meyer also discussed playing golf with his colleagues from Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff, Matt Leinart, and Brady Quinn. Despite being the “old man” among them, Meyer can still hold his own on the golf course. He shared insights into the strict guidelines he followed during the football season when it came to playing golf. He rarely played during the season, only occasionally during open weeks when the team had time off. Despite having retired from coaching, he still maintains a deep respect for the game and the dedication required to succeed in both football and golf.

The interview also delved into the golfing habits of another coaching legend, Nick Saban. Saban, known for his intense focus on coaching, rarely played golf during the football season, prioritizing his team and their performance. Meyer acknowledged playing golf with Saban on several occasions and reflected on their shared experiences as retired coaches who now have more time to enjoy the game they both love. He shared how he and his staff sometimes squeezed in a round of golf during the spring ball, depending on the team’s performance and the mood of the day.

Meyer’s dedication to both football and golf shines through in the interview, showcasing his deep appreciation for the game and its ability to provide a break from the intensity of coaching. His experiences playing with legends like Nicklaus and Saban have shaped his approach to golf, emphasizing the importance of balance and perspective in both sports. As he continues to enjoy his retirement from coaching, Meyer finds solace and joy in the game of golf, relishing the opportunity to tee off and unwind on the course.
