Stacy Lewis has recently announced her three captain’s picks to complete the 12-strong United States team that will compete against Europe in the upcoming Solheim Cup matches. One of the wildcard picks, Lexi Thompson, expressed her excitement and gratitude for being chosen to represent her country in the prestigious tournament. Thompson, who will be retiring from full-time play at the end of the year, will be making her seventh and final appearance in the biennial competition. US captain Stacy Lewis emphasized Thompson’s experience and leadership qualities as valuable assets to the team.
Having won 12 1/2 points from her 23 matches, including three out of four in last year’s competition, Thompson’s selection was described by Lewis as an easy decision due to her proven track record and ability to contribute both on and off the golf course. Thompson, who turned professional at the age of 15 and won her first major title at 19, considers representing her country in the Solheim Cup as the highest honor in her career. To be able to participate once again, especially on home soil, is a dream come true for the 29-year-old golfer.
In addition to Thompson, Lewis also chose Jennifer Kupcho and Sarah Schmelzel to round out the US team for the three-day matchplay event at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia from September 13-15. The trio will join the nine automatic qualifiers to form a formidable lineup against the European team. Led by captain Suzann Pettersen, Europe finalized its team with experienced players Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist, and Emily Pedersen, along with newcomer Albane Valenzuela as wildcard picks. The European team also includes top players such as Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit who secured their spots through the Ladies European Tour Solheim Cup points list.
Despite the strong lineup on both sides, Europe will be looking to defend the trophy they have held since their victory at Gleneagles in 2019. With a second away victory in Toledo, Ohio in 2021 and a tied match last year, Europe is determined to continue their success in the prestigious tournament. The 19th staging of the Solheim Cup promises to deliver thrilling matchplay competition and showcase the talents of some of the best female golfers from both sides of the Atlantic. As the countdown to the event begins, golf fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive battle on the greens of Virginia’s renowned golf course.
