Viktor Hovland admits to finding golf challenging and at times not enjoyable

Viktor Hovland, a professional golfer known for his jovial and forthright personality, recently opened up about his struggles in the current PGA Tour season. Despite his impressive performance in previous tournaments, including a seventh-place finish at the Masters and a win at the Memorial, Hovland admitted that he has faced challenges and inconsistencies in his game this year. These struggles came as a surprise to many, considering his previous success on the Tour.

In a recent press conference at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, Hovland shared his thoughts on his performance at the Olympic tournament, where he shot 67 and 68 on the weekend. Despite his decent scores, Hovland expressed his dissatisfaction with his game, citing a lack of control over his ball flight and the quality of his shots. These challenges have contributed to his overall frustrations and a decrease in his performance levels during the current season.

Hovland’s struggles can be traced back to a sudden split with his swing coach, Joe Mayo, and an effort to change his ball flight pattern during the off-season. This decision ultimately disrupted his swing relationship and led to difficulties controlling the face of his club. However, despite these setbacks, Hovland remains hopeful and determined to work through these issues with the help of Mayo. Their reunion marks a positive step towards identifying and resolving the root cause of his swing-related problems.

When asked about the swing issue in layman’s terms, Hovland explained that his ball flight pattern had shifted from a cut to a draw, affecting his ability to predict the trajectory accurately. Although he acknowledges the mistakes he made in trying to alter his ball flight, Hovland remains optimistic about the learning opportunities presented by this challenge. By analyzing data and facts related to his swing, he believes that he can make progress towards restoring his previous performance levels.

Hovland’s determination to overcome his current struggles and return to his previous form is evident in his dedication to refining his game and focusing on the aspects he can control. By acknowledging his shortcomings and actively working with Mayo to address them, he hopes to achieve great success once again on the PGA Tour. Despite the uncertainties surrounding the timeline for his improvement, Hovland remains committed to the process and is optimistic about the potential for positive outcomes in the near future.
