The PGA Tour recently announced that the Wells Fargo Championship will be renamed the Truist Championship, with Truist Financial Corporation taking over sponsorship in a seven-year agreement. The event will be held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course in May 2025, the week before the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. This marks the first time the PGA Tour will visit the Philadelphia area since the 2022 BMW Championship and the first time in Pennsylvania since the 2018 event at Aronimink. The Truist Championship is set to showcase the vibrant growth markets of Philadelphia and Charlotte, where Truist operates, and further the company’s community impact initiatives.

The Wells Fargo Championship has been a staple on the PGA Tour calendar since its inception in 2003, with notable winners including Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, and Rory McIlroy. The event has historically been held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, except for two editions in 2017 and 2022 when it was played at alternate venues. The Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course will mark the debut of the course on the PGA Tour, highlighting its championship pedigree and recent hosting of prestigious events like the PGA Professional National Championship and the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast and restored by Keith Foster in 2014, features a 7,119-yard layout with par-70. The course has indicated that minimal changes will be made for the Truist Championship, with only rerouting expected to accommodate the event. The club boasts a total of 45 holes, including the St. Martins and Militia Hill courses, with the former hosting U.S. Opens in 1907 and 1910 as an 18-hole layout. This historic venue will provide a unique setting for the PGA Tour’s return to Philadelphia and showcase the city’s rich golfing heritage.

The Truist Financial Corporation’s sponsorship of the event demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting golf and community initiatives. Truist Chairman and CEO Bill Rogers expressed excitement about partnering with the PGA Tour to elevate the championship event and enhance community impact. The Truist Championship will serve as a platform for Truist to fulfill its purpose of inspiring and building better lives and communities in Philadelphia and Charlotte. The event’s alignment with Truist’s values and goals signifies a meaningful partnership between the company and the PGA Tour.

The 2025 Truist Championship will coincide with Quail Hollow hosting the PGA Championship for the second time, adding to the excitement of the PGA Tour schedule. This strategic move by the Tour to rotate venues for signature events reflects a commitment to showcasing diverse courses and markets across the country. The inaugural event at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course will provide players and fans with a new and challenging golf experience, further enhancing the prestige of the Truist Championship. The event’s positioning in the calendar before a major championship will also attract top players seeking to fine-tune their game before the PGA Championship.
