Bryson DeChambeau, known as golf’s Mad Scientist, has a reputation for his unconventional approach to the game. His obsession with equipment is evident in his use of single-length clubs and custom irons with bulge and roll. But one of the lesser-known practices that DeChambeau follows is checking his golf balls in a bathtub filled with Epsom salt to ensure they are balanced. This technique, which he picked up from legendary golfer Ben Hogan, involves floating the golf balls in a solution to identify any imbalance caused during the manufacturing process.

DeChambeau’s coach, Mike Schy, explains the meticulous process behind checking the golf balls for balance in the video shared. This practice, although unconventional, is just one example of DeChambeau’s attention to detail when it comes to his equipment. It is this level of precision that sets him apart from other players on the tour and contributes to his success on the green.

Leading up to his dramatic victory at the U.S. Open, DeChambeau revealed the backstory behind his unique method of checking his golf balls in Epsom salt. He explained that by floating the golf balls in a solution, he can identify any imbalance caused by the manufacturing process. This imbalance, although minor, can affect the flight and consistency of the ball when struck. By marking the top of the ball with a dot after identifying the heavy side, DeChambeau ensures that the ball rolls evenly and flies straight.

The use of Epsom salt to check his golf balls is just one of the many ways that DeChambeau strives for precision in his game. His commitment to finding any potential flaws in his equipment highlights his dedication to his craft and his relentless pursuit of perfection on the course. While some may view his methods as unconventional or eccentric, there is no denying the impact it has had on his performance and success in the world of professional golf.

By going the extra mile to ensure that his golf balls are properly balanced, DeChambeau demonstrates his commitment to excellence in every aspect of his game. While some may see his attention to detail as excessive, it is this level of dedication that has helped him achieve success at the highest level of the sport. Whether it is his unique approach to equipment or his meticulous preparation on the course, DeChambeau’s commitment to excellence sets him apart as one of the most innovative and successful players in professional golf today.
