Tom McKibbin, a 22-year-old Northern Irishman, recently made the decision to join LIV Golf despite receiving advice from his mentor Rory McIlroy against it. McIlroy believed that McKibbin had worked too hard to earn his PGA Tour card and rise up the world rankings to give it up merely for a payday. However, McKibbin ultimately ignored McIlroy’s advice and joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team as LIV Golf kicks off its fourth season in Saudi Arabia. McKibbin explained that he was not currently in contention for majors or the Ryder Cup, so the opportunity to play with top players on a more consistent basis was a huge factor in his decision.
Despite his recent success on the DP World Tour, McKibbin decided to forfeit his PGA Tour card to join LIV Golf. He made this decision after securing his PGA Tour Card at the DP World Tour Championship where McIlroy, who won the event, congratulated him on his achievement. McIlroy praised McKibbin’s accomplishment and expressed his happiness for him, noting that Europe has a lot of good young players that bode well for the future of European golf and Ryder Cups. However, McKibbin saw LIV Golf as an opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the world on a consistent basis, which appealed to him as a young player.
Joining LIV Golf meant that McKibbin would be able to play in select events that are opposite LIV’s 14-week schedule, keeping his DP World Tour membership active. McKibbin also expressed his enthusiasm for the different concept of LIV Golf and its appeal to a younger audience. He saw the opportunity to learn from top players week in and week out as a major draw for him, especially at his age. McKibbin’s decision to join LIV Golf was influenced by the chance to spend time around Rahm and other top players on a consistent basis, offering him opportunities that he couldn’t turn down.
McKibbin is set to make his LIV Golf debut in Riyadh as the season kicks off, ready to showcase his skills and compete against top competition. Despite McIlroy’s advice against joining LIV Golf, McKibbin made the decision that he felt was best for his career and development as a young player.
