Hye-Jin Choi Shines at Maybank Championship with a Stellar Lead Heading Into Final Round

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — As the excitement grows at the prestigious Maybank Championship, Hye-Jin Choi has firmly established herself as the player to beat. With a remarkable round of 5-under 67 on Saturday, she has maintained a commanding four-stroke advantage going into the final day of competition. This tournament represents a significant moment in Choi’s career, as she seeks to achieve her first win on the LPGA Tour.

Choi’s outstanding performance at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club has her sitting comfortably at 19-under 197 after 54 holes. Her lead was impressive at the beginning of the day, with a five-stroke cushion over her nearest competitors. Displaying consistent excellence, she has not only led the Maybank Championship but has also demonstrated her skill and determination, which could soon reward her with a long-awaited victory.

At just 26 years old, Choi boasts an impressive history with 28 career top-10 finishes. Notably, she was a runner-up at the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open as a 17-year-old amateur, which showcases her talent even at a young age. This tournament marks a significant milestone for Choi, as it marks the first time she has led after the first three rounds of play. Previously, when she held a lead heading into the final round of two tournaments, she finished in second place, amplifying the stakes as she aims to convert this lead into a championship win.

“I’ve been waiting for this a really long time, and I’m going to try my best tomorrow," Choi stated confidently. Her determination radiates through her words as she anticipates what could be a dream come true. Her ability to visualize success has proven beneficial, as she seeks to turn her aspirations into reality on the final day of the competition.

Following Choi in second place is China’s Yan Liu, who made a significant jump by shooting a flawless bogey-free round of 65. Liu’s performance highlights the competitive nature of the tournament, with multiple players vying for the top spot as they pursue victory. Australian golfer Hannah Green, part of the victorious team at the International Crown last weekend, is currently positioned third after carding a 67. With four strokes separating her from Choi, Green remains well within striking distance of the lead.

A standout performance came from A Lim Kim, who emerged as the biggest mover of the day with an impressive round of 64, landing her in a tie for fourth place. Kim’s round featured a spectacular eagle on the 18th hole along with six birdies, showcasing her ability to perform under pressure. "It was a great shot, but improbable," Kim reflected on her 25-foot eagle putt, which undoubtedly added excitement to her day and to the overall championship.

World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul, who has shown remarkable consistency in recent years at this venue, also made her mark with a solid round of 65, tying her for fourth place. Thitikul credited the support from fans in the gallery for boosting her performance, likening the atmosphere to a "mini-Thailand." This strong showing further solidifies her reputation as a fierce competitor, especially in tournaments held in Asia.

Defending champion Ruoning Yin, however, encountered a more challenging day, shooting a 69 and settling for seventh place, seven strokes behind Choi. She is joined in this position by New Zealander Lydia Ko, who continues to display her skill with a round of 68. Canadian golfer Brooke Henderson also made her presence felt, scoring 68 but finds herself trailing by 11 strokes.

As the Maybank Championship nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on Choi as she seeks to turn her leadership into a coveted victory. The anticipation of what could transpire in the final round is palpable, and the pressure will mount as competitors inch closer to her lead. Next week, the LPGA will transition to the Japan Classic at Shiga, concluding its five-week Asian swing.

This tournament has set the stage for an exciting climax, and fans can’t help but wonder if this will be the moment Hye-Jin Choi finally realizes her dream of winning on the LPGA Tour. With fierce competitors close behind and the stakes higher than ever, the final round promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the Maybank Championship. As we look ahead, one thing is for sure: the golf world will be watching closely as Hye-Jin Choi aims to secure her place among the elite on the LPGA Tour.
