A Tour pro reveals the secret behind his exceptional long-distance putting

Mid-range and long-distance putting can be the key to success on the PGA Tour, as demonstrated by rising star Max Greyserman. Despite only having 27 career PGA Tour starts, Greyserman made a name for himself in the 2024 season with six top 10 finishes and a second place ranking in Strokes Gained: Putting. His success on the greens was attributed to his skill in mid-range and lag putting, which ultimately set him up for success on the course.

One of Greyserman’s secrets to success is his focus on speed control when practicing his putting. While many players spend their practice time working on starting the ball on line, Greyserman believes that putting is actually 50% speed, 40% green-reading, and 10% starting on line. By prioritizing speed control in his practice sessions, Greyserman was able to excel in mid-range and lag putting, leading the Tour in putting from 20-25 feet and ranking second in putts from 10-15 feet.

According to Greyserman, good lag putting can significantly reduce the likelihood of three-putting on the course. By honing in on speed control and focusing on lag putting drills, players can improve their overall putting performance and lower their scores. Greyserman’s approach to putting has allowed him to consistently perform well under pressure and compete at a high level against some of the best players in the world.

In addition to his success on the course, Greyserman’s performance in the 2024 season earned him a spot in the FedEx Cup standings, finishing 48th overall and qualifying for the lucrative Signature Events in 2025. This achievement is a testament to Greyserman’s dedication to his craft and his ability to perform under pressure when it matters most. By focusing on the fundamentals of putting and prioritizing speed control in his practice routine, Greyserman has been able to elevate his game and compete at a high level on the PGA Tour.

Players looking to improve their mid-range and long-distance putting can benefit from Greyserman’s advice on speed control and lag putting. By prioritizing speed in their practice sessions and focusing on drills to improve lag putting, players can develop the skills necessary to excel on the greens and lower their scores. Greyserman’s success on the PGA Tour is a testament to the importance of mastering the fundamentals of putting and approaching the game with a strategic mindset focused on achieving consistent results.

For more insights from Greyserman on putting and his approach to the game, listeners can tune into his recent appearance on GOLF’s Subpar podcast or watch the accompanying YouTube video. By learning from the best and incorporating key tips and techniques into their own practice routines, players can improve their putting performance and ultimately elevate their overall game on the course. Greyserman’s success serves as inspiration for aspiring players looking to excel in the competitive world of professional golf and highlights the importance of skill development and strategic practice in achieving success at the highest levels of the sport.
