Anže Kopitar to Transition from NHL Stardom to Golf Investment
LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Kings center and captain Anže Kopitar has announced plans to retire at the end of the 2025-26 NHL season, signaling an exciting new chapter in his life: golf. The veteran athlete is now an investor and limited partner in the Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC), part of the innovative TGL Golf League, which is reshaping how the sport is enjoyed.
Entering the TGL Golf League
The TGL Golf League, currently in its second season, introduces a unique format for golf enthusiasts. Matches are held within a state-of-the-art arena that combines virtual courses with rotating greens, offering a fresh take aimed at attracting a younger audience. Kopitar’s excitement about this dynamic approach to golf is palpable.
“I have always been a passionate golfer. I saw the TGL gaining traction and enjoying watching it. When the opportunity arose, I jumped on it,” Kopitar stated.
Kopitar was approached by LAGC president Neil Hubman, who expressed interest in having him on board as an investor. Without hesitation, Kopitar accepted the opportunity.
A Unique Connection to Golf
Kopitar’s journey with golf has evolved over his years in Los Angeles. Originally from Slovenia, he had limited exposure to the sport during his childhood. However, his relocation to Southern California led him to engage more with golf, particularly through charity tournaments organized by the Kings.
His competitive nature drove him to improve his golf skills, especially following a less-than-stellar performance at a charity event. “I wasn’t really into it until I embarrassed myself during my second year at the charity golf tournament. After that, I decided to work on my game,” he recalled. “When I hit that seven-iron perfectly, I was hooked.”
Notable Investors and a Star-Studded Group
Joining Kopitar in the investor group are other prominent athletes and entertainment figures, including primary owners Alexis Ohanian, and tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams. The extended group also features Giannis Antetokounmpo, Alex Morgan, and Shonda Rhimes.
Staying Connected to Los Angeles
Although Kopitar plans to relocate his family back to Slovenia after the NHL season, his investment in LAGC serves as a bridge to maintain ties to Los Angeles. “It’ll be a great excuse to come back, see everybody, and be part of the community I’ve called home for 20 years,” he noted. “Both of my kids were born here, and we have friendships beyond hockey. Now, with LAGC, it will be fun to return without the stress of the season.”
LAGC Season Highlights
The LAGC season kicked off with an electrifying match against Boston Common Golf on January 2 at SoFi Center in Palm Springs, Florida. Boston Common secured a 7-5 victory in this inaugural match, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead—one that Kopitar will watch with keen interest.
Neil Hubman expressed enthusiasm about Kopitar’s involvement: “Anže embodies everything we value at LAGC—elite competition, leadership, and a deep connection to Los Angeles. He’s a world-class athlete and passionate golfer, understanding what it means to represent this city at the highest level. We’re proud to welcome him into our investor group.”
With this new venture, Anže Kopitar is poised to blend his love for golf with his ongoing connection to Los Angeles, creating a legacy that transcends the ice.
