Chan Kim Aims for PGA Tour Redemption While Embracing Fatherhood

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, is buzzing with excitement as professional golfer Chan Kim aims to reclaim his PGA Tour card during the 2026 season at the prestigious PGA Tour Q-School. At 35, Kim finds himself at a pivotal moment in his career and personal life. Following the emotional rollercoaster of welcoming his first child, daughter Jenna, and dealing with her health challenges, he is now looking to secure his future in golf and embrace the joys of fatherhood, specifically the responsibilities that come with it—including diaper duty.

As he stepped onto the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass on a recent Thursday, Kim showcased remarkable resolve, carding an impressive bogey-free 6-under 64 in the first round of Q-School. This stellar performance placed him one stroke ahead of the competition, providing him a significant boost as he fights for one of the five coveted PGA Tour cards available to the field of 176 hopefuls.

Kim’s journey to this point has not been easy. Jenna was born three weeks premature due to a condition known as hydrops, which involves an accumulation of fluid in the fetus, often leading to life-threatening complications. This joyful yet taxing experience has been a whirlwind for Kim and his wife. “The first two weeks were very emotional,” Kim shared, reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding his daughter’s health. “Doctors weren’t sure if she would survive, which added a lot of stress.”

Fortunately, Jenna has shown remarkable signs of improvement, coming home from the hospital just as Kim was preparing for Q-School. This significant milestone has given Kim the strength to focus on his game. Remarkably, Kim missed the birth of his daughter as he was competing in the World Wide Technology Championship in Cabo San Lucas, where he faced disappointment by missing the cut for the 12th time in his last 15 starts. But he knows that the urgency to secure his PGA Tour card is pressing, and he is determined to push through adversity.

After narrowly finishing 130th in the FedEx Cup standings, Kim understood that he needed to deliver a stellar performance during the fall events to reclaim his full status on the Tour. He made a valiant effort by competing in the final two events, all while his daughter was receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “I was so focused on that that nothing else really mattered,” he acknowledged, revealing how deeply invested he was in his family’s well-being.

Kim has navigated several Q-Schools throughout his career, showcasing his resilience. His experience includes successful runs at Canadian Tour Q-School, Asian Tour Q-School, and even a notable second-place finish at the PGA Tour Q-School in 2022. “It’s easier said than done, but at the end of the day, it’s just another tournament that you’re trying to win,” he explained. His mentality is clear: aiming for victory rather than simply securing a top finish.

On the day he led the Q-School, Kim exhibited exceptional skill—his putter was particularly hot, sinking challenging birdies that included impressive distances of 25 feet at the 7th hole, 30 feet at the 9th, and a staggering 35 to 40 feet at the 11th. “I missed all the easy ones, I made all the hard ones,” he humorously remarked, reflecting on the unpredictable nature of golf.

As the tournament unfolds with three rounds remaining, the stakes remain high. Kim is not just playing for himself; he is also playing for his growing family. The prospect of securing a PGA Tour card is not merely a career milestone; it represents the financial stability that will help him navigate the new responsibilities that come with fatherhood. “I have to find a way to make diaper money at least,” he joked, lightening the moment with the reality that child-rearing comes with its own set of challenges.

While Kim continues to focus on his game, he is also embracing the joys and responsibilities of being a new parent. As he balances golf and fatherhood, the next few rounds at Q-School will be critical for him. He recognized that this moment in his career represents both a chance to reclaim his status on the PGA Tour and an opportunity to be an active and present father.

The journey ahead for Chan Kim is filled with uncertainty, but his unwavering determination, resilience, and love for his family will undoubtedly drive him toward success. Whether it’s on the greens at TPC Sawgrass or at home with Jenna, Kim is prepared to tackle whatever lies ahead with grace and grit. As he continues to chase his dreams on the golf course, he also cherishes every moment spent as a new dad, navigating the thrilling adventure of parenthood alongside his professional pursuits.

In summary, Chan Kim’s journey exemplifies the intersection of personal and professional challenges, illustrating how life’s most profound trials can inform and enhance an athlete’s performance. As he engages in this pivotal season at Q-School, the aspiration to regain his PGA Tour card intertwines beautifully with the joys and responsibilities of new fatherhood. For golfers and fans alike, following Kim’s journey is not just about the game; it’s also about resilience, love, and the remarkable capacity to balance life’s many roles.
