Elvis Smylie Triumphs Over ‘Idol’ Cameron Smith to Win Australian PGA Championship

Young left-hander Elvis Smylie achieved a remarkable victory at the BMW Australian PGA Championship by outlasting Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman. Smylie, who was ranked World No. 736 before the tournament began, shot a bogey-free final-round 67 to finish on 14-under and claim his first DP World Tour title. The tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to heavy rain in Brisbane, but Smylie emerged as the champion in wire-to-wire fashion, leading an all-Australian top-five including Anthony Quayle and David Micheluzzi.

Elvis Smylie’s win was even more remarkable considering his background and recent success in the sport. Mentored by Cameron Smith through the Cameron Smith Scholarship in 2019, Smylie continued his impressive run after winning his first pro title at the Bowra & O’Dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open on the PGA Tour of Australasia. His victory at the Australian PGA Championship earned him a full two-year exemption with the DP World Tour, solidifying his status as a rising star in the golf world.
