The second-ever Team Cup, sanctioned by the DP World Tour, is set to take place between Friday, January 10 and Sunday, January 12. The competition sees two sets of 10 pro golfers from Great Britain & Ireland and Continental Europe go head-to-head. The idea behind the Team Cup, which was previously called the Hero Cup, is to give players and potential future Ryder Cup captains experience in a Ryder Cup-like competition.
The first Team Cup took place in 2023, with Continental Europe securing a 14.5 – 10.5 victory over Great Britain & Ireland. The event is seen as a precursor to the Ryder Cup and is held during the early-season break of the DP World Tour. Captains for each team are chosen by the European Tour, and the remaining golfers are selected by the team captains in consultation with Luke Donald, the current Ryder Cup captain.
The 2025 Team Cup rosters feature top golfers from both teams, including the likes of Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose. Each team is made up of players from specific countries, with only Italy, France, and Denmark represented on the Continental Europe side this time around. The format of the Team Cup mirrors that of the Ryder Cup, with three days of matches including foursomes, fourballs, and singles.
The 2025 Team Cup is being hosted at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort, where a thrilling competition took place during the previous event in 2023. The course is not the same as the one used for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, with Yas Links holding that honor. In terms of prize money, the total purse for the Team Cup is $2 million. Each member of the winning team from Continental Europe earns $125,000, while those on the losing Great Britain & Ireland team receive $75,000.
Fans can watch the Team Cup in the USA on the Golf Channel/NBC Sports App and in the UK on Sky Sports Golf. The matches will take place over three days, culminating in singles matches on Sunday, January 12. With players vying for bragging rights and a chance to showcase their skills in a team competition, the Team Cup promises to be an exciting event for golf fans worldwide.
