The ISPS Handa Australian Open is one of the most prestigious national opens in the world of golf. Since 2022, the tournament has featured both men’s and women’s fields competing together across two courses for equal prize money. The new format was deemed a success by Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland, who noted that it had a positive impact on the tournament attendance, attracting its largest crowds in a decade. Despite this success, chairman of the PGA of Australia Ian Baker-Finch expressed reservations about the format, arguing that it diminishes both the men’s and women’s Opens.

During an interview with Melbourne radio station 3AW, Baker-Finch explained his concerns about holding the men’s and women’s Opens together. He believes that having separate events would allow for a stronger field of players on both circuits. He also pointed out that the timing of the tournament, which falls at the end of the LPGA Tour season, makes it difficult for top players to participate. However, he commended players like Hannah Green for committing to the event despite the challenges of the schedule.

Baker-Finch’s comments sparked discussions about the impact of the format on the Australian Open and the overall caliber of the field. He emphasized the importance of showcasing the best players in the world on both the men’s and women’s circuits and suggested that holding standalone events would improve the quality of competition. Despite his reservations, Baker-Finch acknowledged the significance of hosting the tournament at prestigious courses in the Sandbelt region, which attracts top players from around the world.

The ISPS Handa Australian Open will feature defending champions Ashleigh Buhai and Joaquin Niemann, along with a mix of top players from both the men’s and women’s fields. The tournament will see alternating men’s and women’s groups in each round, with every player competing at each course before moving to Kingston Heath Golf Club for the final rounds. This unique format offers an exciting opportunity for fans to witness top-level competition from both the men’s and women’s sides of the sport.

As the event unfolds, fans can expect to see thrilling performances from some of the best golfers in the world, including standout players like Hannah Green and other top contenders. The tournament promises to showcase the talent and skill of both the men’s and women’s fields, providing a unique and exciting experience for golf enthusiasts. With defending champions looking to retain their titles and new challengers vying for victory, the ISPS Handa Australian Open is set to be a must-watch event for fans of the sport. Stay updated on the latest Black Friday golf deals and be sure to catch all the action from this prestigious national open.
