Matt Kuchar and Son Cameron Make History at the PNC Championship

The PNC Championship, often referred to as part of the "silly season," showcased anything but silliness this year, as Matt Kuchar and his son Cameron delivered an impressive performance that culminated in a record-breaking victory.

A Historic Win

The father-son duo entered the final round at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando with a two-stroke lead. Their stellar play saw them dominate the first seven holes, finishing eight under par in the two-man scramble format. They ultimately sealed their victory with an astonishing seven-stroke lead, posting a remarkable score of 18-under-par 54 for a tournament total of 33-under 111, setting a new record for the event.

Key Highlights:

  • Final Round Score: 18-under-par 54
  • Total Score: 33-under 111
  • Margin of Victory: 7 strokes

Cameron Kuchar credited their success to teamwork and outstanding putting. “I was lucky today. I just putted really, really well, and when I missed, my dad would back me up,” he noted.

A Touching Tribute

The picturesque moment came when Matt and Cameron capped off their round with a tap-in eagle on the par-5 18th hole, thanks to a brilliant second shot by Matt. The win was bittersweet for Matt, who teared up as he walked up the fairway, thinking of his late father, Peter Kuchar, who passed away suddenly in February. “Certainly tough for me,” Matt reflected. “Dad is missed. I definitely got very emotional coming in, thinking about this moment and how much it would mean to dad if he were here.”

Notable Competitors

While the Kuchars were in a league of their own, several other father-son teams also performed admirably:

  • T2: Davis Love III and son Dru
  • T2: John Daly and son John Daly II
  • T3: Steve Stricker and daughter Izzi
  • T3: Nelly Korda and father Petr

Davis Love III remarked on the competition, saying, “I told Dru after the turn, don’t look at the leaderboards because I knew we had to do something spectacular to catch up with those guys."

Performance Insights

Matt Kuchar, at 47, has maintained a competitive edge on the PGA Tour, making the cut in 16 of 18 starts this season, with five top-20 finishes, including one in the top 10. Meanwhile, Cameron, now 18, has a handicap index of +3.5 at The Bears Club in Jupiter, Florida. He ranks 24th in the Rolex American Junior Golf Association standings and is set to join TCU’s college golf team next fall.

The Kuchars started strong, beginning their final round with six birdies and an eagle on the first seven holes. Following a par on the eighth, they secured three consecutive birdies and five out of the next six holes, extending their lead to five strokes with just four holes to play.

Breaking Records

The Kuchars’ total of 33 under par crushed the previous scoring record of 28 under, which was jointly held by Bernhard Langer and son Jason, and Tiger Woods and son Charlie. Last year, the Langers defeated the Woods in a playoff.

“It’s pretty magical,” Matt said, reflecting on the significance of their achievement. “If you believe in karma or fate or something greater from above, there’s got to be something else going on.”

He concluded by expressing pride in both his own game and Cameron’s development, stating, “It’s so fun for me to see him continue to get better, and to put on a show when it matters most.”

Conclusion

The PNC Championship served as a perfect showcase of talent, emotion, and familial bonds in professional golf. The Kuchars not only made history but also demonstrated the profound impact that family can have on the sport.
