Michael Alexander, a teaching professional, has noticed a common mistake in golf swings that he receives for review. In fact, he estimates that 99% of people who reach out to him make this error. The mistake primarily involves how the player grips the club, with most individuals holding it in their palms instead of their fingers. Holding the club in the palms can lead to excessive mobility and difficulty using the wrists properly in the swing, resulting in inconsistent strikes and directions. On the other hand, gripping the club in the fingers allows for better clubface control and proper wrist movement in the swing, leading to more consistent strikes and direction.

Proper grip technique involves holding the club diagonally along the fingers in the left hand for right-handed players, ensuring that all knuckles are visible, the glove logo points up, and the V shape created by the thumb and pointer finger points towards the right shoulder. The right hand should be positioned along the bottom of the grip with the fingers covering the grip, making it easier to manipulate the clubface and achieve the necessary wrist set on the backswing and release on the follow-through. It is crucial to maintain the correct grip to optimize control and consistency in the golf swing.

Michael Alexander’s advice on proper grip technique is validated by a personal anecdote from the author, who observed a friend struggling with his game due to a palm grip. This friend sought guidance from a golf instructor who identified the palm grip as a major contributing factor to his difficulties. Adjusting the grip by emphasizing finger placement and proper wrist turn significantly improved the friend’s swing mechanics and overall performance. The importance of grip adjustment is demonstrated through drills that highlight the impact of hand positioning on clubface control and swing path.

Instructors like Kelan McDonagh emphasize the relationship between grip technique and overall swing mechanics, using innovative tools and drills to educate players on the importance of proper hand placement. By utilizing devices like two-by-fours and focusing on specific adjustments to the left and right hand grips, instructors can help golfers understand the impact of grip technique on clubface orientation and body movement during the swing. By addressing common grip errors and providing targeted feedback, instructors can guide players towards more effective and consistent ball striking.

Nick Piastowski, a Senior Editor at Golf.com, underscores the significance of grip technique in optimizing golf performance. Through his reporting on Michael Alexander’s instructional insights and personal experiences with grip adjustments, Piastowski highlights the critical role of proper hand placement in achieving consistent and accurate golf shots. By sharing expert advice and practical tips for improving grip technique, Piastowski empowers golfers to enhance their swings and elevate their overall game. With a focus on the fundamentals of grip technique, players can cultivate greater control, precision, and confidence on the course.
