The reason Scottie Scheffler doesn’t see the FedEx Cup as a season-long race.

Scottie Scheffler is currently leading the FedEx Cup standings heading into the first of the three FedEx Cup Playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He holds a nearly 2,000-point lead over his closest rival, Xander Schauffele, thanks to wins in six tournaments offering points this season. Signature events, which offer 700 points for a win, have been especially beneficial for Scheffler in 2024. However, the Playoffs offer 2,000 points to the winner, making for a more open contest at the Tour Championship where the leader will begin with just a two-shot lead over their nearest rival.

Despite his commanding lead in the standings, Scheffler is not a fan of the Playoff format, which he believes can result in the season-long race coming down to one tournament. He expressed frustrations over the possibility of a moment of bad luck, such as a flare-up of a neck injury, potentially overturning his lead in the standings. Rory McIlroy, who is currently third in the standings, acknowledged that while the format may not reflect the fairest reflection of the best player of the year, it does make the Tour Championship more exciting for consumers.

Scheffler acknowledged the need to strike a balance between creating an enjoyable TV spectacle and maintaining the integrity of the season-long race. While he remains critical of the format, he recognizes the importance of ensuring it is a good TV product. The opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship will see Scheffler grouped with Schauffele, with their tee time set for 1.45pm EDT.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs format has been a subject of debate among players, with Scheffler and McIlroy offering differing perspectives on its fairness and entertainment value. While Scheffler criticizes the format for potentially undermining the season-long race, McIlroy sees it as a way to make the Tour Championship more exciting for viewers. Ultimately, both players recognize the importance of balancing competitiveness with entertainment value in professional golf.

As the FedEx St. Jude Championship kicks off, all eyes will be on Scheffler and Schauffele as they battle it out for the top spot in the standings. With the Playoffs offering high stakes and intense competition, it remains to be seen how the leaderboard will shape up heading into the Tour Championship. Fans can expect an exciting and competitive conclusion to the FedEx Cup Playoffs as the top players vie for the coveted title of FedEx Cup champion.
