Scottie Scheffler’s Putting Transformation: From Weakness to World No. 1

Scottie Scheffler has undergone a remarkable transformation in his putting game, a key factor in his ascent to the top of professional golf. Once a player whose flat stick was considered a significant weakness, the World No. 1 has turned the tides, showcasing exceptional skill on the greens at the 2025 Open. As this talented golfer leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting with an impressive +7.868 after 54 holes, it’s clear that he is currently playing at an unstoppable level.

Scheffler’s improvement on the greens is not merely coincidental; it can be attributed to a focused approach and collaboration with renowned putting coach, Phil Kenyon. In December, Scheffler made a pivotal switch to the claw grip, which has yielded impressive results. He showcased this new grip effectively during the Hero World Challenge, which he won in his next outing. While he sometimes resorts to a conventional grip for longer putts, the claw grip has become his preferred choice from inside 20 feet, a range where precision is key.

Reflecting on his putting evolution, Scheffler emphasizes the importance of continual improvement. "At the end of last year, I always kind of assess things and see if there’s ways we can improve," he noted. The results of this assessment were transformative, as his performance has skyrocketed from being ranked 162nd in Strokes Gained: Putting in 2023 to placing 22nd in 2025. This turnaround is significant, as he is now gaining an average of 0.362 strokes per round with his improved technique.

The switch to the TaylorMade Spider Tour X mallet putter proved beneficial too, immediately contributing to his success in tournaments. This equipment change was a game-changer, starting his 2024 season with a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. As of now, Scheffler boasts three PGA Tour wins this year, including his third major title at the PGA Championship.

Statistically, his ascent in putting metrics is fascinating. In previous years, Scheffler struggled, finishing 77th in 2024 and plummeting to 162nd in 2023. This year, he ranks as one of the best on tour, holding positions such as 4th in Putting Average, 8th in Birdie or Better Conversion Percentage, and 15th in Putts Per Round. These metrics clearly illustrate his exceptional aptitude, placing him light-years ahead of many competitors on tour.

His improvement on the greens has not gone unnoticed by fellow players. During a recent round, Matt Fitzpatrick commented on the stark contrast in Scheffler’s putting performance compared to past seasons. "His putting is night and day," Fitzpatrick stated, highlighting the stark difference since Scheffler’s adjustment. Such accolades from peers validate Scheffler’s hard work and commitment to refining his game.

Analyzing his mental approach, Scheffler cites the importance of commitment to the line when putting. He stated, "I think there’s some pretty subtle slopes in these greens. I’ve done a really good job just being committed to my line." This mental discipline, paired with his technical skills, has led to consistent successes throughout the season.

Scheffler’s path to mastering putting has been paved with a mix of trial and error, professional guidance, and relentless self-assessment. His performance in tournaments illustrates the unity of his technical skills and psychological resilience. Beyond the metrics, this journey embodies the essence of professional sports, where adaptability and dedication often lead to success.

In just a short span, Scottie Scheffler has transformed his game. The once-errant putts have turned into confident strokes, culminating in a strong season filled with victories. As he stands at the pinnacle of the sport, his experience serves as inspiration for aspiring golfers, illustrating the power of resilience and the continuous pursuit of excellence in sport.

As Scheffler continues to dominate the 2025 golf season and beyond, fans and aspiring golfers alike will certainly keep a close watch on his journey. The narrative of his redemption on the greens is a reminder of how profound change often comes from within, driven by a desire to improve and the will to succeed. Whether you’re a fan, a competitor, or a casual golfer, there is much to learn from Scottie Scheffler’s remarkable evolution and the champion he is today.
