The “Old” at Leven is a hidden gem of a golf course designed by Old Tom Morris, located just 15 miles from St. Andrews in Scotland. This unique course is only open for play one day a year, making it a rare and coveted experience for golf enthusiasts. The history of the course dates back to 1848 when it was originally a 9-hole layout on common land in Leven, Scotland. Over time, the course expanded to 18 holes under the direction of Old Tom Morris and became a cherished golf treasure in Scotland.

Due to competing interests and land divisions, the original 18-hole course was split between the clubs at Leven and Lundin, each maintaining their own distinct 18-hole layouts. However, once a year in July, the clubs come together to play the original course in its entirety for the McDonald Trophy competition. This special event allows players to experience the magic of the course, with its natural flow and challenging green complexes.

The design of the “Old” at Leven has inspired other famous golf courses, including a template hole created by C.B. Macdonald based on a hole at the Old Course. The course has a timeless appeal and intimate scale, offering players a rich golfing experience that is both challenging and rewarding. Despite its limited availability for play, the allure of the course continues to captivate golfers who dream of experiencing its unique layout and terrain.

There is ongoing discussion among the memberships of both clubs to potentially allow limited outside play on the original course in the future, similar to how St. Andrews offers public play on the Old Course during certain times of the year. The hope is that the “Old” at Leven will eventually be recognized as one of the world’s top courses and receive more regular play from golfers seeking a truly exceptional golfing experience. For now, the course remains a rare and iconic destination for those lucky enough to play it.

As a GOLF course rater living in Scotland, Timothy Gallant highlights the beauty and allure of the “Old” at Leven, showcasing its historical significance and unique qualities that make it a must-play for any golf enthusiast. With its fleeting availability and rich history, the course holds a special place in the hearts of those who have had the privilege of experiencing its challenging yet rewarding layout. Searching for a truly extraordinary golfing experience? Look no further than the “Old” at Leven.
