Viktor Hovland, a rising star in professional golf, is known for his constant tinkering with his golf swing, always striving for improvement. In the past two years, he has hired and fired his swing coach multiple times in pursuit of his best self on the course. This has led to a rollercoaster of highs and lows in his performance, with notable victories and disappointing finishes dotting his career. Now, as he prepares for the 2025 season, Hovland finds himself in Dubai for the DP World Tour’s Desert Classic, where he is working to implement the latest tweaks to his swing.

Despite his efforts, Hovland admits that progress has been slow and challenging. He acknowledges that the game of golf is difficult, and even with an extensive off-season, he had hoped for more significant improvements in his game. However, he remains optimistic that he is heading in the right direction, even if the journey is proving to be tough. Hovland’s willingness to openly discuss his struggles and faults is refreshing in a sports world often dominated by ego and media training.

The 2025 season started on a lukewarm note for Hovland, with a T36 finish at the PGA Tour’s season opener at Kapalua. He unveiled a new swing move featuring a hitch at the top of the backswing, signaling a departure from his previous approach. Additionally, Hovland announced his split from swing coach Joe Mayo, paving the way for a new coach, TJ Yeaton, to step in and guide his progress. While Hovland acknowledges that his swing is a crucial element in his performance, he also recognizes the importance of finding contentment and focus beyond just the mechanics of his game.

Hovland describes himself as “certified nuts” when it comes to tinkering with his swing, highlighting the constant adjustments and self-critiques he engages in to improve his performance. Despite the challenges he faces in refining his swing, Hovland is encouraged by the successes he has achieved with a swing that he previously disliked. He understands the importance of giving himself the opportunity to excel and believes that with a better understanding of biomechanics and swing mechanics, he can make necessary adjustments to succeed.

As the golf season progresses, Hovland knows that time is of the essence in implementing the fixes to his swing. While there are uncertainties ahead, he remains hopeful and committed to the process of improvement. His willingness to embrace the craziness of the journey and trust in his own abilities as a golfer gives him confidence that he can overcome the challenges he faces. Hovland’s dedication to his craft and his willingness to open up about his struggles make him a compelling figure to watch as he navigates the complexities of professional golf.
